What are battle ropes?

Before we jump straight into our list of the best battle ropes, we’re going to answer some common questions about battle ropes, starting with what they are and how to use them!

Battle ropes are a thick and heavy piece of equipment designed to provide resistance. They are often made from synthetic materials called poly dacron, a combination of polypropylene and polyester. The fibres are twisted into strands and braided to create the rope.

If you’re wondering ‘how much do battle ropes weigh?’, the answer is that each rope differs due to thickness and length. Some ropes are thicker, longer and therefore heavier compared to ones which are shorter and thinner.

If you’re brand new to battle rope training, we suggest to start with a shorter and thinner rope like a 32mm battle rope before moving onto heavier options.

What size of battle ropes should I get?

Choosing the right rope will depend on how experienced you are with battling ropes. If you are brand new to rope training, it's best to stick with something shorter and thinner because it weighs far less.

Otherwise, if you know your way around battle ropes and have used them for a long time, you should definitely invest in a 12m battle rope or above!

What muscles do battle ropes work?

Battle ropes are a really effective piece of kit - it's just such a shame not many people incorporate them in their workouts!

Battle rope training is a great way to target an array of muscles like your upper back, abs, arms, glutes and if you use the ropes for squats and jumps, you can target your legs too!

How to use battle ropes

If it’s your first ever time using this equipment, don’t worry, OriGym is here to help! First, you will need to know how to set up battle ropes correctly. Here’s how:

  • Find somewhere with a solid base to attach the rope to.
  • You could either loop the rope round or if the battle rope comes with an anchor, attach it to the wall or whatever you’re using which has a sturdy base. Many gyms have set anchor points for you to do this.
  • Once you have the rope fixed, hold on to the handles and step back to get ready to perform your exercise.

Now you know how to secure battle ropes, let us give you step by step instructions on how to perform one of the exercises -  the battle rope alternating waves:

  • Stand facing the anchor, shoulder width apart and hold one rope in each hand with your palms facing inwards.
  • Bend your knees, lean forward and try to keep your back straight and whip the first rope with one arm to create a wave pattern that reaches the anchor.
  • Repeat with the other arm almost straight after the first, and the waves should follow closely after one another.
  • Keep alternating your arms quickly and if it’s your first time, try to do it for 15-30 seconds to feel the burn!

Now you know what they are and how to use them, let’s find the perfect one for you!
