How to Use Fitness Hashtags Properly

Ever search for a fitness hashtag on Instagram e.g. "#bodybuilding" and the image has nothing to do with bodybuilding?

This can be really frustrating in the eyes of users and is really unproductive for your post.

This is a post using #Bodybuilding:

top fitness hashtags to use image

Even though, this individual’s account is fitness focused, this post is not, and will not get the traction or engagement from utilising the bodybuilding fitness hashtag. The individual’s searching for the bodybuilding hashtag are expecting to see images and videos directly relating to bodybuilding - shock horror!

Another mistake, is using popular fitness hashtags that do not describe the post mixed in with other hashtags. This is an extremely common occurrence across Instagram and Twitter.

See the post below, which I found searching #Deadlifts. Although the account has previous posts with deadlifting, this post has nothing to do with deadlifting or #Squats for that matter:

Popular Fitness Hashtags image

Try to use the best fitness hashtags that describe the image within the post. Individuals you are looking to attract as new followers who are searching for the fitness hashtag #Deadlifts are expecting to see something related to deadlifting. Using unrelated hashtags causes your user engagement levels to fall e.g. likes, comments and shares. Low user interaction levels on posts has negative impact on the reach of your posts. See it from Instagram's eyes, you create a post and it only gets 10 likes, despite having a 10k audience, Instagram’s algorithm will view your post as low quality, meaning that they will stop showing it.

Users can follow the best fitness hashtags for them to follow. Additionally, users can tell Instagram if they see an image that does not represent the correct fitness hashtag, by clicking "don't show for this hashtag".

This helps guide Instagram algorithms to what content is most relevant to the end user. Even though, nobody really knows the consequences to your account, it is fair to say that if multiple users are flagging your posts as not relevant to their experience, Instagram will more than likely show your content far less often.

Why You MUST Mix Up Your Fitness Hashtags in 2019

Instagram is always changing and adapting.

One big thing that has changed is that users can now follow particular hashtags relevant to them:

Best Fitness Hashtags image

This means that you could create a post with #Fitness and if other accounts are following #Fitness, your post can appear down their news feed without them even following you, thus attracts new followers to your account.

This is also why mixing up your best fitness hashtags is a good idea, as if a user follows a more remote (long-tail) fitness hashtag, your content is far more likely to be seen down their newsfeed, shows up higher when you post and stay there for longer as there are less posts competing for the same hashtag:

Posting using the same top fitness hashtags over and over again results not just in getting seen by less people from the  hashtags that you have neglected, but it's actually against Instagram's rules of use - posting repetitive comments, hashtags or content can result in less user engagement and is a breach of Instagram spamming policy.

Posts such as these, which were posted from the same account, 1 hour apart, utilising the exact same popular fitness hashtags are actually hindering this account's reach:

Top Fitness Hashtags Analytics: See The Effectiveness of Your Hashtags

If you have a business Instagram account, you can measure the effect of your best fitness hashtags in your posts.

If you don't have a business account yet, follow our how to start a fitness instagram guide and don't worry if you have thousands of followers on a personal page, it transfers them over and is free.

  1. Once you have converted your personal account to a business account, if you then tap the "hamburger menu" sign in the top left-hand corner on your profile page you will be presented with a few options.
  2. Click "Insights".
  3. This will then provide you with an overview of Instagram’s accounts analytics:
  4. If you click on the “content” sub tab and the select one of your posts.
  5. Click “view insights” highlighted in blue towards the top of your post and scroll down to the subtab “impressions”
  6. Under “Impressions” you will see the subtab “from hashtags”. The number opposite shows how many impressions that post made via fitness hashtags as seen below from one of our posts:

How Many Fitness Hashtags Should You Use?

This is probably the most common question I get asked with respect to using the best fitness hashtags.

There have been tons of studies contrasting different hashtag volumes and their level of reach and engagement - Remember these are two separate things!

One thing every study has in common is that posting 1-8 hashtags is less fruitful than posting 9 or more. Some studies have shown that 9 fitness hashtags per post is ideal and others that you should maximise the amount allowed by Instagram - 30!

Create a Top Fitness Hashtag & Brand It

Creating your own top fitness hashtag that is branded or unique to your account is a good way of getting people engaged with your account. If you're a brand name, this can be pretty easy to do, as often it can be just your brand name itself:

Top fitness Hashtags image

Even if you're not a business or a brand, creating a top fitness hashtag that is unique to you, helps you create an identity and is particularly useful when running an online contest or a promotion!

By having a branded fitness hashtag, you can identify people who are talking about your account on Instagram.

Add Your Best Fitness Hashtags into Your Bio

You can now add clickable, popular fitness hashtags or branded hashtags into your bio:

Instagram fitness hashtags image

This allows new followers to instantly see what your account is all about, without having to scan through loads of images. People whom visit your profile can click on your fitness hashtag to see who is talking about you on Instagram and be guided through to your branded content.

Here is how you do it:

Conclusion

Including a combination of popular fitness hashtags with location or long-tail hashtags of around 9 or more per post is optimal for people discovering your content. Hopefully, you found our list of 573 top fitness hashtags useful.
