But before we begin, have you ever wanted to work in the fitness industry? If the answer to that question is yes, then check out OriGym’s online personal training course here.

Through this course you will learn more about topics such as beneficial properties of HIIT, and will be handed the tools needed to jump start your career.

Alternatively, you can download our prospectus for further information on all of our fitness courses, in order to find one which is right for you!

What is HIIT?

HIIT stands for high-intensity interval training, a form of cardiovascular training that uses short bursts of exercise followed by rest periods in order to burn a high number of calories. HIIT has been scientifically proven to increase endurance, as well as significantly improve cardiorespiratory and metabolic function.

HIIT sessions are a quick, fun and convenient way of getting your cardio in, wherever and whenever you may require. These sessions can last anywhere between 15 minutes to half an hour and can be executed on bikes, treadmills, or in any way you deem fit for your preferred method of exercise.

If you struggle with traditional forms of cardio such as running or cycling, be it from a physical standpoint, or if you find it too monotonous, then HIIT workout apps should revitalise your passion for exercise.

Whilst this article is dedicated to discussing the 17 best HIIT workout apps, we believe it is important to provide an example of HIIT workouts that you can perform by yourself for reference on the intensity of this type of training.

HIIT Example

Whilst using a treadmill, run/sprint at a fast pace for 30 seconds, pushing yourself as hard as you possibly can, then reduce the speed and walk at a steady, slower pace for 30 seconds before increasing the speed again. Repeat this process 10-20 times, with a 5-minute warmup and warm down routine at the beginning and end of the routine.

HIIT timer apps have been noted to be particularly effective for keeping track of this process, if you don’t have one of these on hand it may be difficult to keep track of your timing, rendering the training somewhat irrelevant.

For more information on how HIIT benefits your health and fitness levels check out our article dedicated to the subject.

Benefits of Using HIIT Apps

Before sharing our list dedicated to the best HIIT workout apps, it will be beneficial to some to hear about the benefits they can provide.

#1 - Saves You Time

HIIT is not a time consuming process to begin with, but relying on yourself or a watch to keep track of time may seriously inhibit your performance. Keeping track of the time in your head may distract you and may not always be reliable, likewise having to look down at a watch may momentarily cause you to lose your footing.

Instead of using these dated methods of time keeping, at OriGym we recommend making life easier for yourself by downloading a HIIT timer app in order to provide a reliable sense of time.

The best interval timer apps will have some way of signaling to you that it’s time to alter your intensity, be it through an alarm or verbal indication. This is a much more effective process which will provide you with an accurate sense of time needed for a proper HIIT workout.

#2 - Helps to Save You Money

One of the added benefits of using an interval training app is that you don’t have to pay for a gym membership! HIIT workouts are so effective that they’ll provide your body with a high caliber workout, without the added requirement of expensive equipment (being able to use these machines are just an added bonus).

Gyms can be so expensive, especially the ones that have hidden fees or require you to fork out additional money for amenities such as parking. Therefore, if you’re on a tight budget do yourself and your wallet a favour, by downloading a HIIT timer app today!

As you will shortly learn from our list, these apps are usually free or can be acquired through a small initial purchase. But even if money is required this will likely be a one time purchase, it's yours forever and won’t typically require a monthly payment like a gym membership would.

#3 - Helps Burn More Calories

High-intensity training can burn a serious number of calories. If you’re a newbie who is looking to reap the benefits of this exercise, we encourage you to use any of the best interval training apps to feature on this list.

HIIT benefits the number of calories burned due to the fact that it disturbs the body’s homeostasis at a higher rate than regular exercise. Homeostasis is a self-regulating biological function, in which our bodies adjust to various conditions in order to survive.

When doing HIIT workouts in order to return to its regular function the body will require more oxygen and energy. In order to provide this the body will turn its calorie storage, burning through it at a much faster rate than it traditionally would during regular rates of exercise.

If you’re looking to burn calories through a method that is less intense than HIIT, why not check out our article dedicated to the 21 walking for weight loss tips.

#4 - Great for Beginners

To piggy back from the former point, the best apps for HIIT will be greatly beneficial to beginners for a multitude of reasons. These apps aim to teach you everything you need to know, from getting your timings right to ensuring proper form, all of the basics will be covered.

Not only are these interval training apps useful for providing guidance and knowledge in relation to athletes overall performance level, but they can be beneficial for building up newcomers confidence.

If you don’t feel fully comfortable with going to the gym and exercising in front of a crowd, then HIIT apps will provide you with an intense exercise which you can perform anywhere you deem fit. Build your confidence from the comfort of your own home and soon enough you’ll be exercising at the gym with ease!

Think of these HIIT apps as stabilisers when you’re first learning how to ride a bike. They will provide you with comfort and reassurance when you would otherwise be a lost novice, teaching you the proper technique needed to achieve goals such as the number of calories burned.

Is It Better To Do HIIT In The Morning or Evening?

Unfortunately, this question does not have a straightforward answer, as the time of day in which HIIT is conducted may be beneficial for some, but not for others. This is entirely subjective to an athlete's personality and the goals they wish to achieve.

For some, using HIIT apps in the morning will be more beneficial as it can kick start your morning with a much needed boost of energy.

Furthermore, if you’re looking to lose weight OriGym recommends exercising in the morning. By doing so you’ll be burning the calories consumed by your breakfast and lunch, rather than simply burning the few calories you consume in the evening.

By doing HIIT in the morning your body has the potential to burn the calories produced by breakfast, lunch and dinner.

However, exercising at night has been known to improve individuals' sleep quality, as it will trigger the hormone known as norepinephrine.

Whatsmore, doing HIIT at night has also been shown to help reduce and suppress night time cravings. If this is one of your biggest problems in relation to weight gain, why not try and incorporate high-intensity interval training into your evening routine.

Is 20 Minutes of HIIT a Day Enough?

Yes! HIIT sessions can last anywhere from as little as 4 minutes when engaging with Tabata. However, please be aware that the most effective length of HIIT will be 30 minutes, it is within this time that you should feel the optimal results of this training.

Once again, deciding how much exercise is ‘enough’ is all dependent on the goals athletes wish to achieve. As we have discussed in relation to the best Tabata apps, you can reap the benefits from as little as 4 minutes, so don’t feel the need to push yourself beyond your capabilities.

Instead, we recommend that you take your time and try out different periods of exercise, in order to see how long you should be personally doing HIIT workouts.

What’s The Difference Between HIIT and Tabata Workouts?

HIIT and Tabata might sound like they’re the same thing, but there are subtle differences that mark them as different from each other. Tabata is a very specific form of HIIT, where you perform 20 seconds of intense activity with a 10-second rest, repeating those 8 times for a total of 4 minutes.

Tabata workouts usually last around 30 minutes, with each 4-minute section focusing on a different exercise. HIIT is more loosely defined, with intervals lasting different amounts of time, but any of the HIIT apps mentioned in the list can also be used as Tabata workout apps!

This is all dependent on your personal approach to training, when faced with a customisable workout option you can easily use the best interval training apps in order to execute a Tabata workout.

Before you go!

HIIT apps are incredibly beneficial to athletes of all ages, body types and skill levels. There is absolutely no excuse for not using these features, as there are always free options and apps which will require no additional gear or equipment.

At OriGym we hope that our list of the best HIIT apps has helped you find the one which will aid in your training. But please remember, HIIT can be incredibly strenuous on the body at times, so be sure to never overexert yourself and take plenty of rest days in order to recover.

If you have found our article on the best HIIT apps to be of interest, perhaps you’d like to enter the fitness industry professionally. Check out OriGym’s online personal training course here and extend your interest in fitness into a career.
