Step 1- Set your goals for getting into the fitness industry

how to get a job in the fitness industry 5

Before you get into the fitness industry, it is a good idea to have a goal for which area of the industry you want to work in.

With the health and fitness industry turning over £1.8 billion in 2022, it is one of the biggest and most lucrative sectors in the UK, containing a huge range of different careers and job titles, including:

  • Personal trainer
  • Fitness instructor
  • Sports nutritionist
  • Sports massage therapist
  • Strength and conditioning coach
  • Yoga instructor
  • Exercise referral specialist
  • Fitness tutor and assessor
  • Group exercise instructor

All of these different career options require different qualifications. But starting out as a personal trainer first is what will open up doors to go onto a more specialist fitness role. We will explain more about this in Step 2!

Given the variation within the industry, it is therefore too vague to simply say you want to know how to get into the fitness industry.

Just think about other holistic industries, such as ‘finance’. Within that, there are hundreds of different areas, such as accountancy auditing, investment banking, insurance broker…the list is endless!

An accountant does a very different job to an investment banker, for example. Although they are both within the realm of ‘finance’, both jobs require different roles and responsibilities, skills and qualifications. And the same applies to the fitness industry!

Your career will naturally develop and change over time, but it is a good idea to have an idea of which avenue of the industry you want to go down.

This is because having a long-term goal in mind will not only keep you motivated, but also help steer your short-term decisions, such as which qualifications you take- which we will discuss later in this article!

Thinking about your long-term career goals can seem daunting, so here are some top tips to make it easier:

  • Make sure you are passionate. The most important thing to remember when deciding which avenue of fitness to go into is that it should be something you are passionate about. Without this, you will lack motivation and find it easier to lose direction!
  • Be flexible. Whilst it is good to have a goal to work towards, you should also be flexible and willing to adapt. As we will discuss later in this article, as you progress in your career, you could well discover a passion for an area of fitness that you didn’t even consider before!
  • Write them down. When it comes to goal setting, writing them down is a great way to hold yourself accountable. For example, you could write your goals in a fitness journal and refer back to them throughout your career to keep you motivated and on-track!

Step 2- Personal training opens the most avenues

how to get into the fitness industry uk 2

If you’re wondering how to start a career in the fitness industry, the first step is to become a qualified personal trainer

You may think that the best way to do this is through higher education, such as taking a sports science degree. But in fact, a PT qualification is a much more effective way of getting into the fitness industry.

Having a personal training qualification not only allows you to work as a PT as you might expect, but it is also a great starting point for all of the fitness careers outlined above.

There are many benefits to taking a personal trainer course over a degree, including:

Taking a personal training course gives you a strong foundation of skills and knowledge

If you’re wondering how to get started in the fitness industry, chances are you don’t have much previous experience or knowledge in fitness.

how to get into the health and fitness industry 4

A PT course is therefore a good first step into the industry because any reputable personal training course will equip you with a strong foundation of skills and knowledge on health, fitness and nutrition in general. We’ll explain what our Personal Training Diploma offers at OriGym cover in more detail next.

Once you’re a qualified PT, you’ll have a strong base from which to base your fitness career on. For example, you could then go on to build upon this knowledge through more specialist courses, such as a Level 4 course in Advanced Sports Nutrition.

A personal trainer qualification gives you career options

Gaining a foundation of knowledge first before you specialise also means that you have the option to change your career goals and direction.

how to get a job in the fitness industry 7

For example, before you get into the fitness industry, you may have a set idea that you want to become a sports nutritionist. But during your personal training course, you find that you actually have more of an interest in the modules on anatomy and physiology, which you didn’t know about before.

This could then lead you to look into fitness careers with a focus on anatomy and physiology, such as becoming a sports massage therapist or pursuing a career in sports physiotherapy.

Without taking a PT course, you may not have discovered this whole other career path!

Whilst it is good to have an element of a career goal in mind, taking a personal training course also allows you to be flexible and adaptable. Rather than limiting yourself to a specific area of fitness straight away, it opens up a wider range of potential career options for you.

A PT course is quicker and cheaper than a degree

One of the main reasons to do a vocational personal training course over a degree is simply that it is much quicker and cheaper to complete! For example, a sports science degree takes around 3-4 years to complete, costing £9,000 a year in the UK.

how to get into the health and fitness industry

Compare this to OriGym’s Personal Training Diploma, which costs just £1299 and qualifies you as a personal trainer in as little as 4 weeks.

Plus, as part of the course, you’ll have access to our expert career advice, which can help you land a job as soon as you qualify. This is therefore a much better option if you want to know how to get into the health and fitness industry and get earning as soon as possible!

You can get an entry-level job as a personal trainer

Another benefit of becoming a personal trainer if you want to get into the fitness industry is that you can get employed fairly quickly and easily.

This is because many personal trainer job vacancies don't require any prior experience.

For example, the personal trainer roles advertised on PureGym's vacancies do not mention the need for any prior experience, such as this one:

how to start a career in the fitness industry 8

how to start a career in the fitness industry 7

As you can see, the only requirement here is a Level 3 personal training qualification. So if you're wondering how to get started in the fitness industry, it is clear that this the easiest route!

So with these benefits in mind, how do you get qualified as a personal trainer to get into the fitness industry? There are two main qualifications that you will need:

Get into The Fitness Industry With a Personal Training Diploma

how to get into the fitness industry 4

Here at OriGym, we offer a Personal Training Diploma, which is the perfect way to get into the fitness industry fast.

This CIMPSA-approved, Ofqual-regulataed course provides you with:

The diploma is one of the best short courses for jobs in fitness, as it allows you to qualify as a Level 3 personal trainer in as little as 4 weeks! You will then be able to work as a personal trainer and train clients on a 1-to-1 basis.

Plus, this is an entry-level course, so you can take it even if you are completely new to the fitness industry.

During the course, you will study modules including:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • The principles of exercise
  • Health and safety
  • Nutritional principles
  • Programming training sessions
  • Creating a personal trainer business plan

Once you have completed your Personal Training Diploma, a whole world of opportunities in the fitness industry open up to you.

Being a qualified personal trainer is also a prerequisite for many of the further specialist qualifications- which we will cover in the next section of this article.

So even if you don’t want to actually work as a personal trainer, a personal trainer qualification is essential if you want to get into any area of the fitness industry!

Enjoying this article so far? Here’s 3 more that we think you’ll love:

Step 3- Get into the fitness industry by working as a personal trainer in a gym

how to get into the fitness industry 4

Once you have your Level 3 personal training qualification, it is now a good idea to work as a personal trainer in a gym.

Around 1 to 2 years is a good amount of time to allow you to gain enough valuable work experience.

Even if your end goal isn’t to be a personal trainer, it is a good starting point if you want to get into the fitness industry. There are several reasons for this:

Working as a PT in a gym gives you financial stability

If you are just starting in the fitness industry, working in a gym is one of the jobs in sport that offers a stable income that offers a stable income as part of your contract.

Whilst you may not earn as much as being a self-employed fitness professional (which we will discuss in Step 5), the financial stability that comes with a contracted role is ideal when starting out in a new industry.

Some gyms will offer an annual salary, such as these roles:

Other roles may offer an hourly rate of salary, such as these:

Working as a PT in a gym gives you practical experience

how to get into the health and fitness industry 2

Any reputable personal trainer course will teach you both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills you need to be a successful personal trainer.

However, there are some hands-on practical skills that you’ll only learn when you actually start working in a gym, such as:

  • The general running and administration side of a gym
  • Cleaning down equipment
  • Working with other gym staff
  • Communicating with gym members

As well as contributing to your personal development, gaining this experience also helps you get into the fitness industry as it will increase your employability when you come to apply for other jobs in the fitness industry further down the line.

For example, once you have worked in a gym for a year, you may then want to progress to another higher-paying role somewhere else. As well as your qualifications, a potential employer will look at your level of experience.

In general, the higher-up the job position, the more experience they will ask for.

For example, the job advert below is for higher-end, reputable fitness club, where personal trainers can earn upto £70,000 per year:

how to start a career in fitness industry 2

As you can see, this roles ask for 1 year’s experience in personal training.

Being able to state that you have a year’s experience working in a gym will of course strengthen your application, as it shows an employer that you are familiar with the industry on a practical, not just theoretical level.

The more experience you gain, the more employable you become, and the easier it will be to get into the fitness industry!

Working as a PT in a gym helps you make connections with other fitness professionals and clients

When working in a gym, you will naturally be surrounded by other fitness professionals every day. You can use these connections to network and help get into the fitness industry- which we will discuss in more next detail in Step 4!

As well as networking with other fitness professionals, working as a personal trainer in a gym is also a great way to gain clients and get to know the people in your community.

Having the opportunity to successfully build rapport with clients in the gym means that when you become self-employed, these clients may want to stay with you!

getting into the fitness industry 3

This therefore means that you don’t have to build your client base completely from scratch if you move to being self-employed.

Even if you only bring one or two clients with you, it means that you have a strong starting point and at least some guaranteed income from these clients.

So, with these benefits in mind, how can you find a job as a personal trainer in a gym?

Before you even apply to any jobs, the first thing you will need to do is to perfect your CV and cover letter.

This is what will help you really stand out to potential employers! Check out our guides to writing a personal trainer CV and a personal trainer cover letter for how to do this.

Once you are confident in your CV and cover letter, the best place to find a job as a PT in a gym is online. There are 3 main places you can do this:

  • General job listing websites such as Indeed and Glassdoor
  • Fitness-specific job boards such as Leisure Jobs and Exercise Jobs
  • The careers section of gym’s websites, such as PureGym and David Lloyd. You will usually find their vacancies under a page such as ‘Careers’ or ‘Work With Us’

Alternatively, if you want to work for a specific independent or private gym, you could always reach out to them directly and express your interest in working for them.

Even if they don’t have a job advertised at the moment, doing this demonstrates great initiative and shows an employer that you are passionate about their company!

Step 4- Avenues you can pursue in the fitness industry

Once you are a qualified personal trainer, lots of different career avenues will open up to you!

Whilst there are plenty of benefits of being a personal trainer, it can also serve as a starting point for a whole range of other fitness careers, which we cover in more detail in the video below:

Become a freelance personal trainer

getting into the fitness industry 4

Once you have started working in a gym and networking with others, if you want to really get into the fitness industry, you should start thinking about moving from being employed by a gym, to working on a self-employed or freelance basis.

This could mean working as a freelance PT, which means you could work for a gym or several gyms, or eventually even starting your own personal training business

Working in an employed contract for a gym certainly has its benefits, as we discussed in Step 3.

But whilst this is a great starting point, once you have gained some experience in a gym, you should be looking to progress your career if you want to really get into the fitness industry and make a lot of money!

There are several benefits to becoming a freelance PT, including:

Being freelance has a higher earning potential

When working for a gym, your earnings are capped at their set hourly or annual rate. But if you are self-employed, you can set your own rates or create a personal training pricing package

This gives you the potential to earn more, as the more your business grows, the more you can start charging your clients.

For example, if you work as a freelance personal trainer at a commercial gym, you will most likely be able to set your own rates.

how to start a career in fitness industry 4

As you can see, at PureGym, clients go directly through the personal trainers, who set their own rates for sessions.

So by becoming a freelance personal trainer, even if you still work within a gym, your earnings are not capped. You can set your own rates depending on your own level of expertise and the level of services you are offering, giving you the potential to earn a lot more than if you were employed under a contract!

You can control your own schedule as a freelance PT

how to get into the fitness industry 3

Whilst some people like the structure and regularity that comes with a contracted role, being self-employed means that you have more freedom over your working hours.

Plus, once you become completely self-employed, you won’t have to do a lot of the tasks that come with being employed by a gym, such as cleaning gym equipment and working on the gym floor.

It is easier to pursue a niche as a freelance PT

As a freelance personal trainer, you will no longer have to limit yourself to training gym members.

This means that you will have the freedom to specialise in a particular area of fitness and target a specific demographic of clients.

For example, you could specialise in personal training pregnant clients, like this personal trainer:

getting into the fitness industry 2

As you can see, this PT is clearly targeting a specific audience, as they have based their whole brand identity around pregnancy. The logo, colours, copy and image all clearly indicate that this is a reputable pregnancy fitness business and is very clearly aimed at pregnant women.

Here are just a few more examples of other niches you could consider going into:

  • Personal training older adults
  • Personal training clients with disabilities
  • Personal training for professional athletes
  • Personal training for weight loss

By finding your personal training niche, you can therefore market yourself as a specialist. This means that you can justify charging more for your services, as clients will be willing to pay more for someone with expertise in a specific area.

Given these benefits, you may be tempted to quit your job in the gym and become freelance straight away! But in fact, we recommend that it is a much more gradual process.

For example, you could work as a part-time personal trainer in a gym, and also take on your own clients outside of the gym at the same time.

This allows you to retain the financial stability of a contracted job, whilst also pursuing your own passion and working towards building your brand.

Create a personal trainer business plan

Any successful fitness business needs a strong business plan! Here are some fitness business ideas to help inspire your business plan!

Get insurance for your PT business

how to get into the fitness industry uk

When working for a gym, you will have most likely come under the gym’s insurance policy. But when you start taking on clients on a self-employed basis, you will need to get insured yourself.

This protects you in the event of an accident or injury to your or your clients. Without it, you could face huge expenses or even end up in court!

Get into the fitness industry as a strength and conditioning coach

fitness industry get into 4

If you are already a qualified personal trainer, another lucrative career option to consider is working as a strength and conditioning coach.

Strength and Conditioning (often known as S&C), is the practical application of sports science principles to improve athletic performance. It is predominantly used with athletes or fitness professionals looking to improve their speed, strength, power and endurance in a specific sport or discipline.

The average salary for a Strength and Conditioning coach in the UK is £24,552 per year.

To find out all about this career, check out our article on How to Become a Strength and Conditioning Coach.

Go into online personal training

fitness industry get into 2

Over recent years, more and more people are opting to work out from home, leading to an increase in demand for online personal trainers

Being an online personal trainer simply means that you train your clients online via:

  • Live video call (e.g. Zoom)
  • Pre-recorded videos
  • Email / instant messaging
  • Specific training apps

Being an online personal trainer is a great way to boost your income, as you won’t have to pay outgoing costs such as renting a space or travel.

You'll also have access to a greater pool of clients, since you won't be limited to training indivuals who live or work in your local area.

Once you're qualified as a level 3 personal trainer, you won't need any additional qualifications to pursue this career! For more detail about this career path and how to pursue it, read our guide on how to become an online personal trainer.

Start selling nutrition plans to your clients

fitness industry get into

One of the most popular ways to progress your career and get into the fitness industry is to write and sell nutrition plans to your clients.

By completing one of OriGym's advanced Fitness and Nutrition courses, you will gain the knowledge needed to write tailored goal-orientated nutrition plans for your clients.

This will expand your potential client base as you will now attract clients wanting nutrition advice. Plus, since you can now market yourself as a nutrition specialist, you can start charging more for your services and increase your earnings.

In fact, the average nutritionist salary is £24,593, with the potential to go up to £55k with experience! This could then lead you to pursuing a career as a nutritionist full-time.

Work your way up to become a gym manager

fitness industry get into 3

A popular avenue to get into the fitness industry is becoming a gym manager.

A gym manager is essentially responsible for the overall running of a gym, including areas such as:

  • Finances
  • Marketing
  • Sales
  • Managing staff

This is a great career option if you already work as a PT in a gym, as you will already be familiar with the gym and its staff, giving you an advantage over external applicants.

Plus, once you are a qualified Level 3 personal trainer, you don't need any additional qualifications to become a gym manger. You will simply need to have acquired a good few years of experience working in a gym, since this is a more senior position.

Since there are a lot of business-related skills required for this role, if this sounds like the career path for you, it is a good idea to take a CPD fitness business course.

This will give you a solid foundation of business knowledge to help you become a gym manager which can help increase your salary.

Run bootcamp classes

fitness industry get into 5

If you’re already a qualified personal trainer, why not start to run bootcamp fitness classes?

These military-style fitness classes are incredibly popular, making it a highly lucrative way to get into the fitness industry!

Most gyms will offer some kind of bootcamp-style fitness class, such as this one at PureGym:

get into fitness industry

get into fitness industry 2

So if you work as a personal trainer for PureGym, for example, you could simply teach bootcamp classes alongside your other roles and repsonsibilities as a personal trainer.

However, you can also run bootcamp classes as your full-time job! Once you have gained experience and decided that you want to pursue this particular fitness niche, you could then start your own business and run your own bootcamp classes.

For example, this personal training company in Liverpool specialises in running 12-week bootcamps:

get into fitness industry 6

You could even specialise further and aim your classes at a specific audience, such as this company which runs women-only and prenatal bootcamps:

get into fitness industry 4

get into fitness industry 5

As you can see, this is a great way to really refine your niche and become a specialist in a very particular area of fitness.

To run bootcamp classes, you simply need to have a Level 3 personal trainer qualification. But it is advisable to also take up CPD qualifications to aid the delivery and quality of your sessions, and to help you pave your way into a niche, such as:

Get into sports massage therapy

smt

Another great way of getting into the fitness industry is to get qualified as a sports massage therapist

A Sports Massage Therapist role involves:

  • Conducting fitness assessments
  • Delivering pre and post-event massages
  • Injury rehabilitation
  • Fitness assessmnet
  • Providing emergency aid during sports

If you don't want to be a full-time sports massage therapist, you can also simply offer SMT alongside being a personal trainer.

This is a great way to increase your earnings because at some point, you will very likely have a client who injures themselves and requires sports massage therapy.

Instead of this meaning that you lose a paying client because they are unable to train, if you are qualified in sports massage therapy, you can keep this client by offering them SMT!

Here is an example of someone who markets themselves as both a personal trainer and a sports massage therapist:

how to start a career in the fitness industry 5

This is a great way to increase your earnings, as you will be able to take on a wider range of clients, as well as being able to market yourself as a specialist, thus justifying charging more for your services!

Step 5- Network with other fitness professionals

If you ask any successful fitness professional how to get a job in the fitness industry, most will emphasise the power of networking.

Networking is the process of interacting with others to swap information. This helps to develop both professional and social contacts.

Such information includes:

  • Names
  • Phone numbers
  • Email addresses
  • Social media
  • Website links

If you’re just starting out in the fitness industry, it is likely that you won’t have many contacts or connections with other fitness professionals. Starting to network straight away will therefore help you gain these contacts!

Networking is a great way to get into the fitness industry because it can help you find a job.

getting into the fitness industry 5

Whilst you can find a job through job adverts on online job boards, networking can also lead to you gaining employment.

For example, say you become familiar with the staff at your local health club. If a job vacancy comes up there, they may tell you about it before they advertise it externally.

This gives you a huge advantage, as not only will the employer already know you, but you will also be familiar with the club and the other staff, making it more likely that you will get hired over someone who they don’t know.

Here are some key ways that you can network to get into the fitness industry:

  • In local gyms and fitness centres
  • Attend events such as seminars, talks and workshops
  • Connect with other fitness professionals on social media
  • Remember to follow up connections you make

Through networking, you could also find yourself a personal trainer mentor. This is generally someone with more experience who helps out people just starting out in the industry.

For example, you could ask your mentor how they got into the fitness industry, or how they moved from personal training to another specialisation. They would be able to use their experience to give you advice on the steps to take to get to where they are today!

Step 6- How to start a career in the fitness industry: Keep learning

how to get a job in the fitness industry 3

So, if you have followed our tips so far, perhaps you are working as a self-employed fitness professional, training your own clients and starting to find your feet in the fitness industry.

This is great, but if you want to really get into the fitness industry, you shouldn’t stop there!

By this, we mean working on your professional development by taking further qualifications.

There are two main types of further qualifications you can take to get into the fitness industry and pursue a specific career path. Those are: specialist courses and CPDs.

How to start a career in the fitness industry with specialist Level 4 courses

how to get into the fitness industry uk 3

If you want to know how to get into the fitness industry in the UK, it is a good idea to take a specialist Level 4 course after you have achieved your Level 3 personal trainer qualification.

Here at OriGym, we offer a range of Level 4 courses for whatever your interests, such as:

Taking courses such as these are a great way to get into the fitness industry as they help you find your personal trainer speciality

As well as aiding your own professional development, specialising in a particular area of fitness is a great way to ultimately increase your earnings.

If you are working as a freelance personal trainer, you can then market yourself as a specialist. As such, you can then justify charging more for your services, as clients will be willing to pay more for a higher level of service!

How to get a job in the fitness industry with CPD courses

how to get a job in the fitness industry 4

As well as Level 4 courses, another good way to get into the fitness industry is to take CPD courses.

Standing for Continued Professional Development, CPD courses are short courses on a particular aspect of fitness. They are a great way to expand your knowledge and learn new skills, making it easier for you to get into the fitness industry.

Here at OriGym, we offer a range of CPD courses, including:

All of our CPD courses take place over just one or two days, so they are one of the easiest ways to increase your career prospects and get into the fitness industry!

So, why should you take specialist and CPD courses if you’re wanting to know how to get into the fitness industry? Here are 3 main reasons why:

#1- CPDs help you pursue your fitness career goals

how to get into the fitness industry 2

As we mentioned back in Step 1, it is a good idea to have a long-term career goal when you are thinking about getting into the fitness industry.

For example, you may have wanted to become an exercise referral specialist, which you wouldn’t be able to achieve without taking a specific Level 3 GP Exercise Referral specialist qualification

#2- CPDs help you to expand the services you offer to your clients

Even if you want to get into the fitness industry to become a personal trainer, taking further qualifications is still beneficial, since they allow you to gain more expertise and offer more services to your clients.

For example, if you take a Level 4 qualification in Lower Back Pain Management, you are then qualified to work with clients with lower back issues.

Since a large number of people suffer from lower back pain, this then opens up a whole new clientbase to you. You’ll be able to take on more clients and market yourself as a lower back pain specialist, allowing you to charge more and increase your potential earnings!

Here is a great example of a personal trainer who has been able to expand the services they offer their clients, as they offer not just personal training, but also nutrition and lifestyle advice.

how to start a career in fitness industry 5

As you can see from their website, they are able to market themselves as a coach who offers three avenues of services: nutrition, training and lifestyle.

They are therefore expanding their potential clientbase by appealing to three demographics of clients (some of which will of course overlap). This will then increase their potential earnings, as they can take on a wider range of clients!

#3- CPDs allow you to move into a different area of fitness

how to get a job in the fitness industry 2

By taking further qualifications, you are opening up a whole new range of potential career paths, allowing you to pursue a different area of the industry.

For example, say you take a kettlebell course, you may find you really enjoy it and want to pursue this area of fitness. Without taking this further qualification, you may not have discovered this!

From there, you can expand your qualifications meaning you can offer more services to clients and increase your employment prospects.
