What inspired you to start

While running my naturopathic clinic many clients had food intolerances and health issues associated around them.

The most common intolerances coming back after testing clients were gluten and dairy. Although there were many gluten free blogs out at the time many of my clients they struggled to find recipes that were both gluten and dairy free, without any refined ingredients.

We have challenges with these foods in my family, most of our meals are gluten and diary free. I started my blog to share my love of cooking and nutrition. 

I wanted to help people struggling with certain dietary needs to find recipes that were easy but still tasty. 

What would you say is the biggest challenge about nutrition blogging? 

As a qualified Naturopath one of the biggest challenges about nutrition blogging is that I know only too well that when it comes to diet that there is no one size fits all.

Everyone is different and what works for some does not work for others and some need to follow a specific diet. 

Trying to provide information around this from an online approach can be tricky as people many are looking for one set diet that will fix their health issues. 

While this can be the case for some it is not the case for everyone and it is a bit of a balancing act when writing about certain diets and their health benefits. 

For example just because my recipes are gluten free, dairy free or many are Paleo does not mean I think everyone should follow this diet strictly to a T. 

We all need to eat what works for us as individuals as opposed to following any strict regime just for the sake of it.

The everchanging landscape and diet trends and all the conflicting information that comes with it.

It is so easy to get distracted by what everyone else is doing and want to switch your own philosophy and direction just because a new diet has become popular. 

For me, it's been more about my own evolution and what I have learnt over the years and luckily I have found what really works, so I am sticking with it.

Today, I would say that my blog and what I share with my audience is paleo inspired but isn't always super strict.

What inspired you to start

I’ve always loved food and cooking, but was pretty discouraged when I had health issues that called for removing things like gluten and dairy from my diet.

Once I felt so much better, though, I knew it was worth eliminating them for good, and it led me to experiment with removing other things like refined sugars and grains.

I realized that eating this way didn’t mean I had to give up good food - if anything it made food so much better!

The other challenge is time, because putting a single post together requires a lot of it. I made myself a promise that Food to Feel Good is only supposed to be fun for me, so if it ever gets stressful I take a step back and revisit it when the creative energy and tasty ideas call.

A few years ago, I became really ill with a chronic inflammatory condition called interstitial cystitis.

My health condition was what inspired us to start the KetoDiet project which includes our website, the KetoDiet app and my cookbooks.

The inspiration came from my own body transformation. I had put on as much as 100 kg weight, which bothered me in my personal as well as social life.

What inspired you to start  
Around 2013 I was inspired to switch to a more plant-based lifestyle with the intention of improving my skin and my overall health.

As well as overhauling my post-student lifestyle of cheap processed foods and late nights, I also began to learn more about nutrition and, more specifically, how eating more plants could lead to some incredible benefits.

Sure enough, the more I experimented with whole plant foods, the better I felt. Soon afterwards I began to learn more about the ethical and environmental impact of consuming animals, which led me to go full vegan in 2014.

First off I would say lead with your own story, as that's always going to be the most inspiring thing to others.

However, you need to be clear when speaking anecdotally that you ARE only speaking anecdotally.

Lots of bloggers & vloggers have got into trouble for promoting certain nutrition habits without actually having a certified qualification.

On that note, you should back up any claims with links to scientific studies, or get a quote from a registered nutritionist/dietician, if you're not one yourself.

I don't believe you need to be a professional to share your own story - healthy living should be accessible to all.

But you DO have to take responsibility for your words and ensure you don't give out any false information that could have negative consequences.

I did start the blog when I was vegetarian but a few years later, I did become 100% vegan for health and environmental reasons. 

What would you say is the biggest challenge about nutrition blogging? 

With the plant based community, you did get a lot of kickback and criticism from people who don't believe that you can live a healthy and nutrient rich life on a plant based diet.

My blog is open minded and doesn't push ideals. It is more about sharing recipes that happens not to use animal by products.

What inspired you to start  
My job "in real life" is as a professional cancer health educator with a major UK (and no global!) cancer support charity. In this job I teach about eating well during and after cancer treatment.

Many people on my course would ask if there was information online that they could use and also to share with others not able to easily access the kind of information we give.

I decided to start Food To Glow to give readers up-to-date cancer and nutrition information and delicious, nutritious plant-forward recipes that they could easily make at home. 

Within a short time I quickly realised that the recipes and advice had a wider audience. 

So, over eight years I have built up an index of over 600 healthy, colourful, global food-inspired recipes.

Most people who come to my site have no idea what I do as a day job, but hopefully they are positively influenced by my fad-free, evidence-based approach to health information and try my recipes. 

At the core I am still a health educator, but now it has gone beyond the classroom and into peoples' kitchens.

What would you say is the biggest challenge about nutrition blogging?  

Because I have a long history of being a health educator and all-ages health advocate, I don't feel that I have many challenges as such.

I stick with evidence-based advice and don't get caught up in the faddier end of nutrition. But nutrition science, especially as relates to disease prevention and treatment, does evolve and of course I need to evolve with it. 

For example, for awhile agave was thought to be a preferred sweetener because it was a low-GI substance.

But now we know that free-fructose is damaging to the liver in the longer term, and we don't recommend it over normal sugar.

But, in the main, I think my main challenge is that there are unqualified but popular people on social media that are influencing peoples' nutritional knowledge in a potentially detrimental way. 

All well-intentioned for the most part. But when you have a platform it is crucial that the messages you are giving are accurate.

GluFREEgan™ began as a response to our guests’ needs at the Bed & Breakfast, House On Main Street in Williamstown, MA.

What inspired you to start  

Gluten Free Alchemist was started as a result of Coeliac diagnosis within the family and to build a recipe database for my then young daughter's future, as so little decent GF food was available commercially.

 It was important to us, that our daughter and family should be enabled to eat anything that was available to the general population and to eat a good, healthy balanced diet.

It has developed over time, but still aims to share good gluten free food (with an emphasis towards baking thus far) which uses healthier, balanced flour blends and ingredients, with a little decadence thrown in.

What would you say is the biggest challenge about nutrition blogging? 

From a gluten free perspective, the biggest challenge about nutrition blogging has been the over-emphasis in the GF world of using and producing rice flour-based mixes and products and flour blends that rely on ingredients which are nutritionally devoid and imbalanced.

 There is current concern in some quarters about levels of arsenic in rice and this being particularly significant for people reliant on a GF diet as most of what they consume by way of 'staples' and snacks will contain it.

The cost of using alternatives can be insurmountable for many.

Equally, the amount of sugar used in most commercial GF products is unnecessarily high (including in breads etc) and this creates additional health and wellbeing risks. 

Within Gluten Free Alchemist, I aim to support and encourage confidence in the use of alternative, more nutritionally-balanced flour blends (providing alternatives to my readers that they can mix at home) and towards experimentation and creativity with home-blending.

I try to use less sugar and unrefined sugar in many recipes. 

Whatever the recipe, I will never compromise on taste. Food should always be enjoyable, 'healthy' or not!

What would you say is the biggest challenge about nutrition blogging? 

I think the biggest challenge is making the science interesting.

Many people want a “quick fix” when it comes to healthy eating, but that’s not really how you accomplish and sustain health goals. It’s more about making changes that are backed in research and sticking with them.

What inspired you to start  

I started as a way to combine my lifelong passion, being in the kitchen creating recipes and competing in endurance and fitness events. 

I’ve been doing both for about 30 years! I wanted to show others how eating well can be easy and flavorful, with everyday “clean eating” meals to fuel an active lifestyle and also specific recipes to optimize performance.

What would you say is the biggest challenge about nutrition blogging? 

Honestly, it’s helping people overcome the mindset that eating well or dieting, as some might want to call it (but I don’t like that word), is a short term activity with a definitive stopping point – instead it’s a lifelong lifestyle change!

There is a lot more room for enjoying a range of foods (even treats) if you are consistent with eating well and exercising over the years – that being said, it’s never too late to start!

What inspired you to start

When you are on a mission to make a difference, but don’t like any of the job options available in public health, naturally you decide you must create your own opportunity. I founded Health Stand Nutrition Consulting Inc. in 2000 straight out of university when dietitians didn’t really work much in private practice.

I’d watched my grandparents pass away with health issues and my dad struggle with advanced cardiovascular issues at a very young age.

Nutrition played a role in all of these situations and since I had always loved science, I became fascinated with understanding how and why what we eat impacted wellness.

The biggest challenge about nutrition blogging is combating the noise of dieting behavior, food rules and body weight obsession. 

As an advocate for balanced living it can take time to shift the eating mindset to one of balanced, not clean eating.

Food choices do not need to be thought of as good or bad. Food is just food.

We eat for different reasons, not simply to add nutrients into your body. Live by the hasthtag #balancednotclean.

There are no bad foods, only bad diets. Nothing is off limits. You can eat anything, just not everything. It’s all about being intentional about your choices.

Just like budgeting your finances, you need to develop the skill and awareness of spending and saving where it counts. Similar to our bank account, what we choose to spend on is highly individual.

There will always be key basic needs we must spend on (similar to a basic level of nutritious foods that need to be consumed for health and productivity in our day).

Then we have some money left to spend on fun stuff (just like we have some calories left to spend on soulful foods chosen for taste and enjoyment rather than any type of nutritional need).

So how do you know if you are truly eating well?  The answer to this question is complicated since no one food causes health issues and there is not one single eating style that is best for health or weight concerns.

There are, however some clear nutrition factors that are best known to help and you can find out more about them by filling out our Personal Nutrition Scorecard.

People often ask me “What is the best diet to follow?” The answer is actually quite simple.

The best healthy eating lifestyle is the one you can sustain for life. If we break this down further, there are a couple of  key words to look at here.

First of all, our goal is to have you think about the best lifestyle you can follow rather than the best diet (after all, the word diet has the word die in it and often brings about negative feelings of deprivation).

Building a lifestyle means you have thought about eating fully.

Eating fully is the balance between eating healthfully (foods chosen for geeky nutritious reasons that improve health) as well as eating soulfully (foods chosen purely for fun, social enjoyment and taste).

One without the other leads to imbalance in either wellness or quality of life.

This brings me to the second word that is really important in the statement “the best healthy eating lifestyle is the one you can sustain for life.”

Another important word here is sustain. Ideas of what to follow are endless but actually being able to stick to an eating plan is difficult.

Any short-term cleanse, detox, rigid plan or diet that will end in a matter of days or weeks simply lacks benefit in your long-term health and often leads to feelings of failure when you’re unable to follow this.

Time and time again we see ‘food rebel’ behaviour happen when our clients go off a rigid diet plan (aka overeating forbidden foods). The worst part is the heavy emotional toll our clients feel when feelings of guilt, shame and failure creep in.

As with most things in life, one size does not fit all. Be wary of any eating plan that says there is one way to eat that is superior.

Scientific evidence does not suggest this is the case. You can be healthy following a wide range of eating plans (including both eating meat or as a vegetarian).

I started Ascension Kitchen over 8 years ago, and at the time, it was purely as an outlet to share my own healing journey.

What inspired you to start  
Moo Free are an ethical, family-owned UK manufacturer whose factories are based in Devon in England.

The company was founded in 2010 by husband and wife team Mike and Andrea Jessop. Mike is lactose intolerant and Andrea has a gluten intolerance.

Their son and grandson are both lactose intolerant which is why they initially decided to try and make some great tasting, dairy free "milk" chocolate for everyone.  

What one piece of advice would you give to an aspiring nutrition blogger? 

The best advice I can give when writing a blog is to account for everyone who could
potentially read your blog, never assume that all your audience knows and understands the
jargon you throw at them, it’s always handy to offer brief exclamations to complex science
terms to avoid alienating your audience.

Try to keep posts relatively short and to the point, you can have a small intros – so long as it
fits with info you are writing about, but if you want to engage your readers better, get them to
the info you are offering as quickly as possible.

Lastly if you need to use outside sources for information credit and link where you sourced
your info from, on top of that never use just one source, find multiple sources, doing so helps

make you a more trustworthy and reliable blogger that people will want to revisit your blog.
