While we’ll mostly be exploring  the question of “what snacks can you eat on the paleo diet” in this article, it’s first important to understand what constraints are imposed by the paleo diet, and what products you can and can’t eat. 

Also referred to as the “caveman” or “Stone Age” diet, the paleo diet limits your choice of foods to those that would have been readily available to early humans living in the paleolithic era. 

Essentially, this completely rules out any processed or artificial foods, and reduces your diet to naturally occurring foods (such as fruits and vegetables) and lean meats which would have been obtained through hunting or fishing (such as salmon or pork).

#9 - Grilled Peaches

  • Phosphorus - manages how your body stores and uses energy

Turkeys also contain sodium, choline, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and selenium. The zinc found in turkeys helps your immune system and helps heal wounds, whilst the selenium acts as a powerful antioxidant. 

Similarly to chickens, turkeys are a great source of protein, which is vitally important for muscle growth and maintenance. Additionally, protein may even support weight loss by making you feel fuller for longer (also known as satiation), thus leading to you snacking less! 

Turkey sticks, especially turkey sticks that are made from free range turkeys, also contain more beneficial Omega 3 acids in them than battery-farm turkeys, so keep an eye out for them!

#18 - Rosemary Roasted Sweet Potatoes

Looking for some more paleo diet snacks ideas that can also form part of a versatile and well balanced meal? We’d suggest these rosemary roasted sweet potatoes.

While it may be tempting to simply use regular potatoes in this paleo snack recipe, sweet potatoes are much more nutritious, lower calorie, and a more flavourful substitute that’s often used on even the strictest personal trainer meal plans.

This is a simple recipe which only contains 5 ingredients, all of which are paleo-friendly and won’t mean you’re straying from the restrictions of the paleo diet. Those ingredients are the potatoes, rosemary, salt, pepper, and olive oil.

Sweet potatoes are absolutely packed with nutrients and are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. One medium baked sweet potato for example, or around 173g, is approximately 161 calories and contains less than half a gram of fat, 4.3g of protein, 36.6g of carbs and 3.8g of fibre. 

It also has substantial quantities of Vitamins C and B6, as well as magnesium, manganese, potassium, folate, phosphorus, and niacin too.

Potatoes are also rich in antioxidants which help protect the cells from damage, and may even be able to help improve and regulate blood sugar control, as well as your digestive health! 

This is arguably one of the simplest paleo diet recipes for snacks - all you need to do is add all the ingredients together in a mixing bowl, coat the sweet potatoes thoroughly, and place them in the oven for 30 minutes to roast, or longer if you want crispier skin and softer flesh. 

Not to mention that you can batch cook these so that you’ve always got a supply of these super healthy paleo snacks for work or school.

#19 - Grain-Free Crackers with Cashew Cheese

If you’ve got a craving for crackers and cheese, but are worried there’s no paleo friendly alternative, then think again.

Grain-free diets are on the rise, and for good reason! One reason for this is because grain-free diets may actually be able to help reduce inflammation. 

Some studies have suggested that there is a link between daily intake of wheat or processed grain, and chronic inflammation, which can lead to further health complications. 

Cutting grains out of your diet may cause some people to naturally increase the number of fruits and vegetables that they eat, which both play a role in reducing inflammation, and allow the body to build up its immune systems. 

Grains are also naturally rich in carbs, which can be an issue for people with diabetes. Refined carbs, like those found in white bread and other processed foods, are problematic as they’re devoid of fibre. 

This means that they get digested very quickly, causing a spike in blood sugar levels. Cutting grains out of your diet could therefore help regulate your blood sugar levels, though there are other ways of dealing with this issue too. 

Cashews are already a healthy, high protein vegan snack, and cashew cheese simply takes these qualities and makes them into a paleo appropriate cheese. It contains a healthy dose of magnesium, iron, zinc, fats, and copper, all of which play vital roles in the body, and it’s important to meet your recommended intake.

Combining the grain-free crackers with cashew cheese is a simple and cheap way to improve your paleo diet snacks further, without having to worry about any potential side effects such as dangerous spikes in your blood sugar levels. 

#20 - Egg Muffins

Egg muffins are some great paleo diet snacks that you can eat for breakfast to ensure that you start your day right. 

There are many different recipes for making paleo-friendly egg muffins, and that’s one of the best things about these paleo snacks (UK)! Their versatility means that you can swap and add different types of vegetables as much as you like without compromising the paleo snack’s health benefits in the slightest. 

Some vegetables that you could use that would complement these paleo snacks are spinach, peppers, and onions. Spinach, for example, is an excellent source of vitamins K, A, C, B2,  as well as magnesium and iron.

However, if you don’t want to add these vegetables to your egg muffins then the beauty of the recipes is that you don’t have to, and can just add whatever you want instead, whether that’s lean ham or sausage meat, or just leaving these quick paleo snacks as plain egg muffins. 

The eggs' excellent protein profile, plus their folic acid content and ability to raise your ‘good’ cholesterol levels, combined with the health benefits of the aforementioned vegetables, make this snack an excellent option for healthy paleo snacks . 

It takes around 35 minutes to make egg muffins from scratch, and better yet, you can batch cook them, meaning these quick and easy paleo snacks for work can last you all week if you cook enough of them.

#21 - Cabbage Crisps

Unfortunately, when it comes to paleo snacks, there’s very little options when it comes to lunchbox staples or party foods - crisps, chips and croquettes are off limits, and other savoury paleo snacks aren’t quite the same.

This is where cabbage crisps come in.

These paleo snacks pack the same flavourful punch that you might expect from a packet of your favourite crisps, but are paleo diet- and vegan-appropriate (often featuring as a staple in the best vegan cookbooks), as well as being incredibly low in calories (around 96 calories for a substantial serving).

Perhaps one of the most important factors to consider when deciding on whether or not to make these tasty paleo snacks is their versatility. You can season these crisps with anything you want - rosemary, sea salt, black pepper, chili flakes and garlic granules are among some of our favourites, but feel free to experiment.

Not only is cabbage immensely high in its vitamin content (with an abundance of Vitamins C and K), but it also contains noticeable amounts of minerals and other compounds such as fibre, protein, folate, manganese, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, all of which contribute towards different processes in the body.

These simple paleo snacks also aid with digestion thanks to their fibrous content, as well as having qualities that can contribute towards heart health and lowering blood pressure.

Not to mention they’re one of the easiest paleo diet snacks - simply chop up some of your cabbage leaves, drizzle with a little olive oil, season and bake for 30 minutes.

#22 - Tuna Salad Cucumber Bites

Tuna salad cucumber bites are a great option if you’re looking for small, portable paleo snacks for work that aren't going to take a lot of time to make! 

To make this healthy paleo snack, all you need to do is mix mayonnaise and tuna together, cut the cucumber into slices and add the tuna salad mix onto the cucumber slices. It’s as simple as that. 

The reason it’s tuna that’s being used in this recipe is because tuna is arguably one of the most nutrient-rich fish. Tuna is an excellent source of Vitamin B12, which is an essential vitamin that the body needs to make DNA and helps you to form new red blood cells. 

The high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids in tuna may also help reduce the levels of ‘bad cholesterol’ in your arteries and is even associated with reduced rates of cardiovascular disease. Cucumbers are high in nutrients but low in calories, with one 300g cucumber only containing 45 calories, as well as 0g of fat and only 11g of carbs. Cucumbers are also rich in Vitamin K, Vitamin C, magnesium, potassium, and manganese too! 

They’re also rich in antioxidants and may even be able to aid you on your weight loss journey, due to their low calorie count!

#23 - Granola

Granola is a great option if you’re looking for healthy paleo snacks to have for breakfast! 

Traditionally, granola is a mixture of rolled oats and nuts, but it can also include other grains, dried fruit, seeds, spices, puffed rice, and nut-butters in it too. It is generally considered to be a very healthy breakfast cereal. 

However, when you’re looking for appropriate paleo snacks, it’s vital that you ensure there’s no grains included as part of the recipe (especially important if you’re buying pre packaged granola) as these are not permitted under the paleo diet.

Once you’ve found the right one for you, though, granola is incredibly diverse as far as paleo snacks go. One thing to note is that, although this is one of the best paleo snacks, it is calorie-dense, with 50g containing as much as 195 calories. 

Most granola is rich in fibre and protein, which both help make you feel fuller for longer. High-protein ingredients in granola include foods such as almonds, nuts, walnuts, and cashews, and seeds like pumpkin, sesame, and hemp, all of which are components of some of the healthiest cereal bars, too.

High-fibre foods like nuts, oats, and seeds also slow down the emptying of your stomach and increase the time it takes to digest, which can help you feel fuller for longer. This will have a positive effect on your weight loss journey ,as it will lead to you snacking a lot less than you normally would.

Though tortilla chips made from grain aren’t allowed as part of the paleo diet, grain-free substitutes made from paleo-friendly ingredients such as chia seeds, cassava, and coconut flour are. 

Make sure to double check the ingredients when you’re buying pre made paleo snacks, especially as many of the ingredients you’ll often find in off-the-shelf won’t be suitable for your paleo snacks, and so it’s important to find ones that are.

Prosciutto is a raw, cured ham made from pork leg, and its salty flavour pairs exceedingly well with fruits such as melons. Prosciutto is rich in Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, B9, and E, and contains a huge variety of minerals, including calcium, copper, iron, and magnesium, to name a few. 

There isn’t a complicated recipe to follow to make this snack. All you need to do is wrap the melon slices up in the prosciutto and you’re good to go. The densely packed vitamins in the fruit, and the vast array of nutritional benefits in the meat undoubtedly make this one of the best paleo snacks you can add to your diet! 

#27 - Carrot Fries
