Be willing to graft. To work hard, abandon any idea of getting rich quickly. Start at the bottom, working the graveyard shift somewhere and work your way through the industry.

Don’t accept the job offers that come your way working in big gyms - like duty manager. It’s easy to take the slight pay rise but your dream of being a PT will die as will your passion for fitness. 

Hold on to your burning desire, that’s what will get you up at 5 am every day and get you home late every night.

Accept that you will work weekends. See it as an opportunity to meet new people and better yourself. Be willing to work more than any other trainer. 

Care about your clients - and I mean genuinely care. If you don’t. Please get out of the industry you’re making the rest of us look bad.  

Over deliver - every session. Whether it be over running, remembering personal details, getting them a small gift (something as simple as a book they would like) - giving them a lift when their car is broken down. 

Whatever it is, do what others won’t, so you can help more people, be a leader in your field, and ultimately be able to provide for your family more than you thought possible.

Know that you’ve chosen a saturated industry but ultimately if your refuse to quit, it doesn’t matter, everyone else can be a statistic- but you’re going to win.

Tricky question as there’s isn’t one piece of advice.

I’d say “Be Real!“

The business is very hard and requires a huge amount of time and effort and although lucrative, it’s not always easy money, you have to value yourself and what you put in to it before you see the benefit of that.

Also I’d encourage to be myself, socialise, be able to participate, reading, express your life purposefully, be a healthy individual, be more involved in activities.

Keep making a constant difference to lives, lead, teach, coach, be honest (honesty is power)

Be happy, be professional and productive, keep it clean, pleasant, and always well mannered, well dressed, working with anyone you can who want to achieve the same things in a job, or life, or within other roles and responsibilities.

Give to those who need it most, and share with those who don’t have, make time for important things, family, friends, walks, running, enjoying the small delicacy’s in life, swimming, playing sports, take worthy risks, explore new worlds and other outdoor adrenaline filled activities, and live your life to the fullest!

What inspired me to become a personal trainer?

I was always into keeping fit from a young age. During my teenage years I would spend many hours training with friends in the local health clubs around Essex. At 18, I got my first job as a Fitness Instructor at my local Fitness First club.

I began doing inductions and also teaching various group exercise classes and really enjoyed being in that energetic and lively environment.

I began studying for my BTEC Diploma in Sports Science at South East Essex College and then went on to study for my BSc Sports Injuries and Rehabilitation.

Choose the profession for the right reasons. Set out with your goal to become as knowledgeable and as credible as possible.

Have a true desire and motivation to genuinely want to help people move better, get fitter and become stronger. Don't do it for the wrong reasons, just to make a quick buck and to not really take the time to learn your trade and upskill for your potential clients.

What inspired you to become a personal trainer? 

I came from a sporting background, I played ice hockey for 7 years, and loved all things active (football, cricket, tennis, running, you name it!).

When I went to college I did A-level PE, and at Uni, I did Sports Science. Being a PT just naturally happened. 

During my teens I had 3 different jobs (car  valeting, call centre work and working at JD sports) - I hated them all, lol, and lasted no longer than a week in most jobs!

I knew that I didn't want to be employed, and that I wanted to start my own business, especially after reading both Richard Branson and Alan Sugars autobiographies. 

I was good at sport, and decided I wanted to help other people with their health and fitness goals.

I studied to become a personal trainer, and then started my own personal training business called LEP Fitness, back in 2012.

Since that time I've completed over 11,000 sessions and I absolutely love it. Helping people achieve their goals is the most rewarding feeling, and I'm extremely happy with the career path I've chosen. 

What one piece of advice would you give to an aspiring personal trainer?

Continue to develop yourself as a coach, and as a person. Never stop learning. "Your business grows, as you grow" - read books like Think & Grow Rich, How To Win Friends And Influence People, Start With Why, and business autobiographies - for inspiration.

Listen to audiobooks, podcasts, hire coaches/mentors, attend courses which help make you a better coach, etc.

Continue to invest both time and money on yourself. If you spend 1 hour a day on your personal/business development, and do that for the next 5 years, I can guarantee that you'll be a very successful personal trainer.

What inspired you to become a personal trainer? 

The reason I became a personal trainer was because I simply loved to 
train but it wasn't always this way, I know how hard it was to get started as a newcomer at the gym and that was the main driving force.
 
Entering the gym for the first time for myself was a daunting task due 
to the feelings of inadequacy, lack of experience and also self-consciousness.

I wanted to eliminate these factors and make the gym a friendly environment for all to feel welcomed within.

The main thing I say to all who I meet is to never be afraid to ask questions and also to understand that all members in the gym are their to progress themselves,no matter what their target is. 

I didn't know this when I started and honestly wish someone was welcoming enough to give me a plan and guidance of the way to go.

What one piece of advice would you give to an aspiring personal trainer?  

The best advice I was given when training to be a PT was to be myself, there are plenty of Instagram Guru's and noise in the industry.

But there is only one of you, so make sure your personality shines through. 

Everything from the Spartan colours, training methods and motivations are related to my background, sporting history and battle to be the healthiest positive version of MYSELF I can be. 

Clients want to see that you as the trainer practice what you preach.

What inspired you to become a personal trainer? 

The main reason was for myself. I was in a career I wasn’t enjoying and making me unhealthy.

I’d been training since I was 14 and the gym was a happy place, whether is was kickboxing or lifting weights.

I was already reasonably knowledgable so transferring over to being personal trainer seemed like the logical step for my own wellbeing 

What one piece of advice would you give to an aspiring personal trainer? 

Find a niche. If you can specialise you will find success.
