Why Try Recipe Boxes?

Finding meal kits in the UK can be daunting, but there are many reasons why they can be beneficial for you, especially if you frequently find yourself struggling to do the shopping, or opting for unhealthy options for dinner. We’ve outlined some of the biggest benefits of opting to use recipe boxes for your meals.

#1 - Saves You Time

There are many reasons why getting recipe boxes delivered to your door can be beneficial, but one of the main ones is that it can save you a lot of time, which is especially important if you’ve got a frantic schedule, or working hours mean you’re only home later in the evening.

Food shopping, prepping, and cooking can take hours every week, and getting a recipe subscription box cuts all that out, leaving you more time to focus on things you enjoy. This could be making time to work out, so that you can reap the benefits of regular exercise, or simply relaxing in the evening.

That time can all mount up, especially if your schedule means you miss out on valuable relaxation time, and can have an impact on your overall mental health. However, there is a solution.

Many recipe boxes also offer quick 30-minute meals, which save you even more time while still allowing you to enjoy nutritious and delicious meals. These will have been specifically designed to contain all the necessary ingredients and macronutrients to ensure a full nutritional profile.

#2 - Limits Food Waste

Sometimes, when you go food shopping, you can end up with too much of one ingredient that you only need for one meal. Or, you could find yourself with a whole jar of herbs that’ll end up forgotten in the back of the cupboard in a week, especially if it’s for a specific kind of cuisine or special occasion dish.

If you’re interested in learning more about helpful herbs and spices, though, OriGym have put together a comprehensive report on the best herbs for weight loss.

This food waste can certainly be a deciding factor when choosing the right recipe box for you, especially if you’re aiming to be more environmentally conscious, or you simply have limited kitchen space, and can’t store much food.

Many recipe boxes portion out everything perfectly for you, including all the herbs and spices for your dishes, and (perhaps most importantly) can save you money in the long run, as you won’t be buying ingredients that’ll only go to waste.

This ideal portioning can also aid in your weight loss journey, especially as portion control can make a huge difference if you’re trying to lose weight. By having meals that are pre-portioned to provide all the necessary nutrients and vitamins you need, it can help curb cravings, and lower your daily calorie intake.

#3 - Great For The Environment

Think about the amount of plastic you see in the shops – fruits and vegetables are often packaged in tonnes of it, plastic bags are used to carry them home in, and many products aren’t sustainably sourced.

Not to mention that it can be difficult to know where your food is produced, and if you’re aiming to eat more local fruit, vegetables and meats, this can often detract from your goal. Or, if you’re following a more specific diet (such as ones that only permit paleo snacks and foods), it can be vital to know where your food comes from.

However, with many fresh food recipe boxes, their ingredients are usually locally sourced here in the UK, making them more environmentally and eco-friendly than ones sourced from abroad. This information will always be displayed on their website, too, so you’re able to check where your food comes from, and even where it was farmed.

Many of the best recipe boxes also feature recyclable or compostable packaging, so you won’t be generating any plastic waste with your meals, which is another great point to consider if you’re aiming to eat more sustainably.

#4 - Expands Your Tastes

It’s quite a common occurrence, finding ourselves in a cooking rut, making the same three meals on a loop, or being too uncertain to explore new avenues when it comes to our usual diet. This is perhaps one of the biggest benefits of subscribing to a meal kit delivery (UK) service.

Recipe delivery boxes can help you branch out with your cooking and try new cuisines, as well as learn new skills in the kitchen. This could be something as simple as a new form of animal or plant protein, or you may find yourself learning to julienne carrots or butterfly chicken breasts.

It’s also great if you’re looking to revolutionise what you eat, too. For instance, if you’re considering reducing your meat intake, getting recipe boxes delivered to your door can help you to cook delicious vegan and vegetarian meals that aren’t boring or bland, or introduce you to new taste and texture sensations.

The same goes for if you’re considering adding in a couple of low-carb recipes a week – recipe boxes will add so much more variety to your weekly meals, as well as helping you understand the differences between macronutrients, and how much the body needs to function as effectively as possible.

Not only will you receive fresh recipe boxes, but they’ll be healthy too. Each meal is balanced perfectly and includes premium ingredients that’ll make all the difference in your cooking.

What To Consider When Choosing Recipe Boxes

#1 - Price

Sometimes, if you’re on a tight budget, or you’re new to recipe boxes in general, it can be difficult to work out what you’re able to afford, and what you’re getting for your money. That’s the main reason we put this guide together - to ensure you’ve got all the information you need to make a sensible decision.

The best recipe boxes offer good value for money, so you won’t be paying massive amounts for your weekly meals. These will often be more established brands, but we’ve given pricing details and how often the subscription recurs under each option above.

However, one area to be aware of is that this won’t apply if you’re getting one off food delivery boxes for a special occasion, such as On the Table or Restokit. These will simply be meal boxes, providing you with everything you need for a one-off, decadent meal, or a dish from a country you’ve never explored the cuisine of.

This is often how we find out about how more uncommon foods can be incredibly advantageous, such as learning about the benefits of persimmon fruit, or discovering how blueberries can boost your health.

For subscription boxes, however, bear in mind how much it’ll cost you per meal, and how you can budget for it, especially if you’re just beginning your recipe box journey.

#2 - Recipes

Recipe delivery boxes usually offer a great selection of recipes from various cuisines and areas of the world, but this can be entirely dependent on your tastes and personal preferences. For instance, if you’re really not a fan of pasta, it might be a good idea to avoid more pasta-based recipe boxes, such as Pasta Evangelists.

We would, however, strongly advise opting for one of the recipe boxes that mix things up, and provide you with a wider variety of cuisines and meals to try. Hello Fresh, Tastily and Gousto are especially good for this, in that they allow you to adjust and tailor subsequent boxes with what you did (or didn’t) like.

If you like variety in your meals, choose a recipe subscription box where you can customise your meals each week, so you never get bored. The options we’ve outlined above are all great choices, but if you’re leaning more towards a specific cuisine or area of the world, then finding a recipe box that tailors to that place’s flavours and tastes could be a good idea.

For that, we’d recommend a box that specialises in one specific country or place, such as the Modern Persian Kitchen, or opting for one-off boxes (such as those offered by The Cookaway), as these can allow you to pick your favourite.

#3 - Time

Some food recipe boxes require you to prep and cook each meal you get, such as the Morrisons Meal kits or Simply Cook, which can be a huge detriment, especially if you’re incredibly pressed for time, or your kitchen space is either limited or unavailable altogether (if you’re having home improvements done, for instance).

Others, like Modern Persian Kitchen and Allplants come frozen and all you need to do is microwave them, which many might find much easier. And while this may seem an easy or “lazy” way of cooking, it’s vitally important to consider that all of these meals are prepared as freshly as possible, and are simply frozen for your convenience.

In fact, these meals will often still contain all of the right nutrients and vitamins for the immune system, and freezing simply means that they’re much easier to transport, and therefore bring to you.

When choosing your recipe boxes, consider how much time you’ll need to prepare them – if you want something super quick and easy, get frozen ones, but if you like the process of cooking and want to learn some new skills, opt for a fresh one.

#4 - Diet

If you’re vegan, vegetarian, or have allergies, when you’re choosing your recipe boxes, it’s important to find one that offers you an amazing range of meals to choose from. All recipe boxes will have key information on their website regarding their ingredients, so you can make a much more informed decision.

For instance, if you suffer from Coeliac’s disease, or you have a serious intolerance of specific foods or ingredients, we’d strongly advise doing your research, and finding out which box is the right fit for you.

Even if you’re concerned about missing key nutrients, many meals will provide you with more than enough, but there are other ways to intake key elements such as collagen, if your diet doesn’t contain enough. Read more in our comprehensive report on the benefits of collagen, and how the body uses it.

However, if you’re following a specific dietary path or plan, there are tailored options available. If you want exclusively vegan meals, try Grubby or Allplants, but if you fancy another kind, be sure to research into their options so you aren’t stuck with just a couple of recipes per week!

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Recipe Boxes Worth It?

Sadly, this question doesn’t really have a single answer, as it does depend entirely on you and your personal circumstances. As we’ve already explored, there are some recipe kits in the UK that can be quite expensive, and others that are much more affordable, and mirror the cost of an average weekly shop.

Ultimately, we would always suggest taking stock of what you do in the evening, and whether or not you find time to cook filling, healthy meals. If the answer is no, and you frequently find yourself short on time, or having to snack on unhealthy biscuits or chocolate to make up for an unsatisfying meal, then food recipe boxes could be worth a try.

Frozen options are much more convenient, and many options will contain foods that help burn fat or speed up the metabolism, meaning you’re not only eating healthier, you’re actively combating the excess calories you may have consumed.

If you are looking to try some meal kits in the UK, many have introductory offers that allow you to try them at a discounted price. This is great for if you’re new to recipe boxes, as you get to see how they could fit in around your daily life and if they’d be worth it for you.

A word of warning, though – some automatically subscribe you to their service, so be sure to cancel if you don’t want to continue with them.

Can You Get Recipe Boxes Without A Subscription?

This is an option for some recipe boxes, but not for others, and it's often a sticking point, especially if you’re just looking to dip your toe into the waters of recipe boxes in the UK. A subscription fee you didn’t expect, or an unwelcome box of food arriving at the doorstep, can be a nasty surprise.

Food delivery boxes from places such as Restokit and On the Table aren’t subscription services but are instead one-off recipe boxes that are pricier than your average ones from other places. Other services, such as Simply Cook, will have a subscription service in place that will automatically renew.

Even with recipe delivery boxes that do require a subscription, many come with the option to skip a week or pause temporarily if you don’t need them. The important thing is to remember to do this, so you don’t get charged or end up with too much food.

If you’re prone to forgetting, or are concerned that you might neglect to cancel or skip a week, then it could be a good idea to opt for non-subscription based options, such as On The Table, as you’ll only be charged for what you order.

Are Cheap Recipe Boxes Good?

Absolutely - even the more affordable options in the list of recipe boxes we’ve mentioned above are all of an incredibly high standard. Many of them use locally sourced, high quality ingredients, and combine these with delicious herbs and spices to create delicious meals that are not only tasty, but healthy too.

For instance, many of the above options contain incredibly beneficial vegetables and the best superfruits, as well as the perfect proteins and accompaniments to ensure that you’re always getting a full complement of essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients.

Cheap recipe boxes still offer quality ingredients and home delivery, so you don’t have to splash out for the expensive ones to get the good stuff. Most recipe boxes, unless otherwise stated, will offer free shipping, too, meaning one less expense.

The best cheap meal kits in the UK include Morrisons food delivery boxes, Gousto, and Hello Fresh, all of which offer amazing recipes and ingredients at a lower cost than other recipe delivery boxes.

Alternatively, if you’re unable to commit to a more subscription-based service, then opting for one-off delivery options (like Kurami or On The Table) may be more expensive in the short term, but won’t have any unexpected or recurring charges you need to cancel.

Is It Better To Get Fresh Or Frozen Recipe Boxes Delivered?

This is a question that’s ultimately only answered by personal preference. Healthy recipe boxes can come fresh or frozen – if they’re good for you, they’ll be good for you in either form, as freezing locks in the vitamins and nutrients we’d find in their ingredients.

Many prefer fresh recipe boxes, though. You’re tasked with the chopping and preparation, as well as ensuring everything is cooked according to the timings of the recipe, but for some this can be a cathartic experience, similar to how running benefits our mental health. You’re also in complete control of seasonings, and can therefore adjust it to your liking.

For instance, if you’ve got a spicy dish in one of your recipe boxes, you might opt to put less chili in, or if you’re cooking a pasta dish but don’t like garlic, you could choose not to include that, and instead replace it with another spice or seasoning.

There are many advantages to having frozen recipe boxes delivered, though. You might prefer to get frozen meal kits if you’re short on time or want a break from cooking. Frozen meals can also cut down on food waste, as there’s no deadline to eat them, meaning you can keep them in your freezer for months.
