What is a running gilet?

You might be reading this article wondering what is the point of a running gilet?, or what does a running gilet do exactly?

Running gilets actually provide a great inbetween layer that provides a little extra insulation for chillier weather. Lighter than a running jacket but thicker than a running top, this is an easy way to layer up your insulation. Best for running in spring or autumn, or later summer evenings when the sun has dipped, running gilets warm you up without hindering your movement.

#1 Nike Therma-FIT ADV Repel Men’s Running Gilet

Price: £144.95

First up on our list of the best running gilets for men and women is this one from Nike.

Nike have used their Therma-FIT ADV technology in this running gilet to create a heat-regulating fabric, which will help to keep you warm during the coldest mornings and evenings.

The woven fabric is also ultra-light, with down fill along the front to keep you warm, whilst the durable, water-repellent finish helps to keep you dry through rain or sweat!

The men’s running gilet from Nike has an adaptable venting system in the areas where you’ll need it most, as well as quick-access zip pulls.

This makes it much easier to adjust your warmth when wearing gloves, so there’s no need to keep exposing your hands to the cold or damp conditions!

Available in a flattering khaki green colour, and with a mock neck completing the coverage, this padded running gilet from Nike is certainly worth the investment in our opinion.

#2 Proviz REFLECT360 Men’s Running Gilet

Price: £69.99

If you’re looking for a reflective running gilet, the Proviz REFLECT360 is a great option.

Designed with a 100% reflective outer shell, wearing this running gilet will ensure that you remain safe and visible whether you prefer early morning runs, or late evening commutes.

The only downside of this reflective coating is that the breathability is slightly reduced. However, ditching your base layer on slightly warmer days will immediately solve this issue!

As well as creating a wind and waterproof running gilet, Proviz have ensured that they include super comfortable soft-mesh back and under arms, allowing built-up heat to escape as you run.

With two side pockets and fitted shoulders, you won’t have to deal with excess material flapping about in the wind, which can be highly distracting and off-putting!

The lock zip feature also ensures that your zip won’t slide down, and protects against any uncomfortable neck chafing.

Coming in sizes XS to XXXXXL, Proviz have ensured that there’s something for everyone to wear, which is just one of the reasons why we would recommend this running gilet.

#3 - BTR Hi Vis Running Gilet

Price: £26.99

ladies Hi viz Running gilet

If you’re looking for a women's and men's running gilet that provides that little extra safety then the BTR Hi Vis running gilet will be the best one for you.

This is a fluorescent running gilet in yellow with silver reflective stripes to ensure that you’re visible during both the day and at night. For extra comfort there is an elasticated trim around the waist and arms which allows for a better fit around various body shapes, and this reflective running gilet is also generous on the sizing to allow for other clothing to be worn underneath. This means that you’ll be able to layer up as much as you need!

The BTR is available in sizes from XS to XL which means that it's great as both a ladies running gilet and a men's running gilet.

#4 OMM Rotor Vest Running Gilet

Price: £110

One of the best features of this Rotor Vest Running Gilet from OMM is that it uses the same insulation as their sleeping bags. This gives an amazing warmth to weight ratio!

Not only is this a windproof running gilet that insulates during wet weather, but at 135g it is lightweight and works well as part of a layering system in colder temperatures.

It is also filled with 40g Primaloft Gold, and features Primaloft Luxe material in the collar, which gives it a soft and comfortable fit.

If you’re looking at padded running gilets for men with storage, then this one is perfect. OMM have added a chest pocket, which reverses to create a handy storage sack!

The chest also features zips, which increase ventilation and pocket access, giving this running gilet both a comfortable and convenient fit.

#5 - Trespass Aretha Running Gilet

This is the best men’s running gilet in terms of value for money as the quality is good and the price is relatively cheap.

Lightly padded with a drawcord at the hem, this men's running gilet is great for insulation on cold runs, and it’s equipped with three low profile zipped pockets so you’ll be able to take your phone, wallet, and keys with you if you need to.

The product is water-resistant and has an inner storm flap which will help make sure your base layers stay dry if you get caught out in any sudden showers. If you’re looking to start running but aren’t sure how to layer up properly for winter, take a look at our article on winter running gear to get all the info you’ll need.

The design is simple yet comes in a great range of colours, including black, burnt orange, flint, moss, navy, olive, red, and ultramarine.

Price: £130

As a sustainable brand, Patagonia is a good choice if you’re looking to do your bit for the environment, whilst also purchasing a high-quality running gilet for women or men!

Insulated with PrimaLoft Gold material, Patagonia have designed this gilet to be lightweight, compressible, and with great insulation properties even when wet.

With a quilting pattern, this padded running gilet is not only flattering, but also helps to stabilise these insulating properties, ensuring that you remain consistently warm whilst running.

Alongside being equipped with a wind and water-repellent DWR coating, the high collar and adjustable drawcord at the bottom hem help to seal in further warmth.

If you’re looking for a men or women’s running gilet that offers freedom of movement, the Nano Puff Vest is perfect, with its sleeveless construction and athletic fit.

Finally, Patagonia have included several pockets in the design, including two zipped hand and inside pockets. This ensures that you can keep your hands warm, and your valuables safe!

waterproof running gilet uk

Adidas are well-known for their innovative sportswear and this Adidas running gilet (men's) is a prime example of that.

If you’re looking for more of a lightweight yet warm layer that won’t weigh you down on your runs then this is probably the best men’s running gilet on the market. It’s windproof and water-resistant, and the slim cut material stretches to move in unison with your body meaning no chafing, unwanted tugging, or increased perspiration. The freedom of movement provided by this men's running gilet is unmatched.

The Climawarm insulation will provide that extra warmth to keep the cold at bay whilst you run. Whilst this lightweight running gilet is only available in one colour, grey, the design is sleek and elegant and will no doubt catch people’s attention as you sprint past them.

#9 Sweaty Betty Fast Track Thermal Quilted Running Gilet

Price: £100

The new and improved Fast Track Thermal Quilted running gilet from Sweaty Betty is another of our favourite options.

With a stretchy, thermal fabric made using recycled materials, this one is not only great for warmth, but is also good for the environment too.

The quilted design on this padded running gilet adds to this warmth, and also provides an element of style too. If you look good whilst running, you’re likely to feel good too, which can help to boost your performance!

As well as the quilting, the jacket has an adjustable toggle at the back to cinch in the waist. This is comfortable, convenient, and flattering, meaning that the gilet won’t move about as you run.

It also features 2 side pockets and a zip pocket at the back, so you’re able to store all of your essentials and valuables whilst you run.

As with all good running gilets for ladies or men, this one is ultralightweight and comes in sizes XXS to XXL, so everyone can benefit from Sweat Betty’s contribution to the market.

#10 Kalenji Warm+ Sleeveless Men’s Running Gilet

Price: £29.99

This Kalenji men’s running gilet may be one of the cheaper options on our list, but it certainly doesn’t compromise on quality!

As a padded running gilet, Kalenji have designed this to provide a good level of upper body protection, thanks to the technical fabric that they use. They’ve also ensured breathability and freedom of movement alongside this.

Although insulated with wadding to keep you warm, this running gilet features mesh inserts under the arms. These help to wick sweat away and prevent moisture from building up.

There are also 2 zipped pockets to hold all of the essentials, including one pocket designed specially to hold your smartphone.

With the fabric helping to guard against windchill, this is another great option if you’re looking for a water and windproof running gilet to wear during your sessions.

#11 Brooks Carbonite Women’s Running Gilet

Price: £100

Whether you’re looking for running gilets for men or women, there’s an option for both with this Brooks Carbonite Vest.

The stand-out feature of this gilet is the 3m Scotchlite Carbon Black Stretch reflectivity. This has been placed in specific motion zones, to ensure that drivers can identify you as a runner from as far as 600 ft away.

It also has a breathable DriLayer seal fabric, which lets excess heat out without allowing the elements in, offering both wind and water protection.

The reflective running gilet has draft flap snaps to keep it in place if you do choose to unzip it for ventilation. This means that you can focus on your running technique, rather than on your gilet flapping in the wind!

Finally, Brooks have added in two zip-secure hand pockets, as well as a chest pocket for keeping your valuables safe at all times.

#12 - Under Armour Mens Vanish Hybrid Running Gilet

Price: £34.49 - £81.43

lightweight running gilet

While this is marketed as a men's running gilet, the simplicity of the design means it could easily be worn by both men and women, although there is an option for a blue gilet if you want something typically a little more masculine.

Stretch-woven fabric is combined with soft knit fabric in this gilet to provide durability without compromising on comfort. This material is better for wicking sweat and moisture. It's also constructed with a high level of elastane which means it will stretch to your body and move in sync with you.

This is not a padded running gilet so the thinner material makes it better for slightly warmer months, perhaps for late night running in summer or chilly autumn days.

#13 - TCA Excel Thermal Running Gilet

Price: £29.99

ladies Running gilet uk

For a padded running gilet that won’t weigh you down or cost a fortune, the TCA running gilet is the best option.

The body is padded with synthetic down but is also lightweight and windproof - you can face the elements without freezing an arm off!

There are zipped pockets on each side providing secure storage and flexible fabric panels on the sides and back to increase your freedom of movement.

The TCA running gilet (men's and women's) come in either cool grey or clematis blue, with the TCA logo made from reflective material to give you that little extra visibility in the dark.

#14 - Yoko Hi Vis Running Gilet

Price: £32.95 - £44.39

hi vis gilet running gilet

This is a great reflective running gilet that is a bit thicker than more high end running gilets, so if you’re looking for visibility and warmth rather than unrestricted movement then this is probably the best gilet for running for you.

As a softshell bodywarmer it’s stiffer in material but still lightweight enough to wear for running, and being lined with fleece makes it incredibly insulated.

Admittedly, the design is quite industrial in that it looks like a typical high vis jacket without sleeves, but as a reflective gilet for running this design is the best and there is no way someone would miss you running down the street in the dark. However, the Yoko does come in 2 different reflective colours which you can get with or without navy accents: fluorescent yellow or fluorescent orange.

And if you want more reflective running accessories to make sure you stand out in the dark then check out our article on the best reflective running gear here

#15 - Gore Wear Windproof Running Gilet

Price: £87.50

running Gilet running uk

Gore running gilets are no nonsense, high quality and fit for purpose.

This gilet is fitted with the Gore Windstopper Soft Shell technology that allows for all weather running with breathable yet warm fabric. This is designed with a close fit collar, full front zipper with zip tags and semi-lock slider, and zipper under-flap. There are two front zipped pockets for easy storage. This running gilet has great ventilation due to an integrated mesh insert within the pocket, and there’s elastic binding on the edges that allow for a closer fit.

Lightweight and packable, this windproof running gilet provides a great extra layer while still being light enough to just pack in your bag. (Available as both men's and women's running gilet).

#16 - Adidas Rise Up N Run Vest

Price: £64.95

running gilet womens

This running gilet (women's) is not only stylish, but also practical and warm. Incredibly versatile, it’s light enough to keep your movement unrestricted but also insulated enough to keep you warm through the colder temperatures.

This is a water-resistant gilet fitted with a sweat-guard pocket: store your personal items without having to worry about moisture damage from either rain or sweat.

The design is contemporary in that the regular fit provides a semi-fitted feel that contours to the shape of your body, so no loose fabric to get in your way, and the stand-up collar and drop hem provide that little extra coverage.

Arguably, this is one of the best women’s running gilets in terms of combining style with safety. Adidas have fitted this product with 360° of reflectivity via well placed reflective stripes and details all around the gilet.

(And boys, if you’re reading this review and getting jealous don’t worry, Adidas also has a men's version of the Rise Up N Run Vest!)

#17 Under Armour OutRun the Storm Men’s Running Gilet

Price: £63.97

The final running gilet that we would recommend is this one from Under Armour.

Everything in the UA Outrun the Storm range is super water-resistant, meaning that it protects better and is more durable than other running rain gear.

The lightweight, ripstop woven fabric is also tougher, yet more stretchy and comfortable than other types of running gear.

As a waterproof running gilet, Under Armour have designed theirs to repel water without sacrificing breathability. This is due to the back vent construction, which adds to the superior comfort factor of the gilet.

Alongside these features, the gilet has a wind-resistant construction, and a bungee adjust bottom hem for a secure fit.

The drop in, mesh back pockets are ideal for carrying essentials, as well as the secure zip back pocket, which allows you to fold up and store the running gilet away once you’re done.

Do I need a running gilet?

If you prefer running in the early mornings or evenings then running gilets are perfect to keep the cold at bay. They’re also great if you prefer running without the potential chafing of extra sleeves! As autumn rolls in running gilets are a perfect option to bridge the gap between the end of the hot summer days and the onset of the crisp autumn nights.

How to choose a running gilet?

There are a few important things to take into consideration when buying the best running gilet. The design is important, whether you’re looking for reflective elements, increased freedom of movement, fleece lining or padding, thinner material, waterproof properties, windproof properties, or water resistance. These factors all depend on your running style and when you prefer to run.

What’s the difference between a running gilet and a running vest?

trail running gilet with pockets

There is a significant difference between running gilets and running vests: running vests tend to be more tailored to functionality, with extra pockets, specific compartments to hold your phone, water bottles, keys, running gels, etc.

On the other hand, running gilets are more about providing an extra layer of warmth.

It really is that simple, and hopefully you now don't need to ask what's the difference between a running gilet and a running vest? again.

Before you go!

No doubt you’re ready to add that great running gilet to your online cart because they make the perfect in-between layer for chilly weather that doesn’t warrant a full jacket. Water-resistant, windproof, padded or lightweight - there’s a running gilet for every outdoor workout.

Keep an eye out for sales or discounts as some of the higher quality products on this list are a little pricey!
