Why Use Treadmill Workout Apps?

Treadmill workout apps offer a wide variety of features that help you get the best out of your run. With them, you can gain access to hundreds of individually tailored workouts from some of the top coaches in the industry to find a run that works for you.

They can help give you an edge on your treadmill by keeping you engaged and retaining your attention over long periods of time.

The reason for this is because they provide relief from the monotonous feeling often experienced on a stationary treadmill when you’re faced with nothing but the wall. Depending on the virtual running app, they can be transportive and fun, keeping your mind occupied while your body does the hard work.

Another benefit is that they are great for competition, whether that be with yourself or with others. Tracking your progress and personal records is a great way to stay motivated and achieve your full potential as a runner. This can prepare you for virtual running challenges & events or real-life marathons!

A key reason for using a virtual running app is to create variation in what is usually a very simplistic exercise. With so many apps offering plenty of variation, it’s high time to jump into our list of the best treadmill workout apps.

#8 - iFit: At Home Workout Coach

Available on: Apple App Store & Google Play Store

Price: Free

Premium Subscription: £11.00 per month/£107.00 per year (converted from USD)

App Store Rating: 4.7

Google Play Rating: 4.1

With this virtual running app, you can take your treadmill travels from your home or gym to the edges of the world. Virtual running locations range from Antarctica to Bora Bora, so you really can go global.

Your trainer will not only provide you with the guide you need to properly conduct your chosen exercise, but will also give you information on each virtual destination’s history and culture - it's intense exercises meeting incredible tour guides!

With real-time statistic tracking, you can view your progress/performance on the go, whether this be mid-workout or post workout. This will help to track your growth over time, either over many months or simply over the course of a single workout.

The main advantage of this treadmill running app is that if your treadmill is compatible with this app or the device you’re using, then you can plug it in and iFit will automatically adjust your treadmill’s settings to adhere to your chosen workout.

For example, if the workout features a gradually increasing speed or incline, then the app will take care of it so you don’t have to stop and break the flow of your run. It's seamless, handy and helps you stay focused on your performance over fiddling with treadmill settings.

iFit also features studio classes with groups of people, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the workout atmosphere. Downloading this treadmill app now will grant you a 30-day free trial, after which you can select your membership level (premium being £11.00 a month) and get running.

#9 - BeatBurn Treadmill Trainer

Available on: Apple App Store

Price: £3.00 (converted from USD)

App Store Rating: 3.7

Finally, we have one of the best treadmill workout apps available on the market. Coming in behind an initial paywall of £3.00, the BeatBurn Treadmill Trainer actually changes the beat of your music to match the tempo of your selected workout.

The app’s technology scans the beats per minute of your music and adapts it on the go; a minute of sprinting? Your song will be booming. A light jog interval? Your song will lull. This type of audio engagement will help to elevate your performance drastically, not to mention how much of a fun feature it is.

BeatBurn will frequently mix up the tempo to keep you excited and on your toes, rapidly changing between intervals and exercises so you truly feel a burn. However, if it gets too much for you to handle, you can adjust the intensity levels as you go. Maybe you need an extra breather? Or maybe the workout is just too easy and you need more? Whatever it is, you can customise your challenge as you go.

Your speed and calories burned are tracked constantly so you can set goals as you move, plus it feels great to visualise your progress in real-time as you run.

Given that you have to pay initially to access this app, there is currently no membership scheme, so you can simply buy it and immediately gain access to the entirety of BeatBurn’s features.

If fitness and music are two of your passions, why not combine them both as a rewarding career? OriGym’s Level 2 Exercise to Music Course might just be the thing for you. This qualification allows you to blend tremendous fitness benefits with fun, social elements by taking charge of rewarding ETM and aerobic classes.

What running apps work on treadmills?

The short answer - any! Most of the virtual running apps listed above are specified for treadmill usage, but any old running app will suffice. As long as it tracks your speed, distance and calories burned, a regular running app would serve as a speedometer of sorts.

However, an app from our list above is likely to be more beneficial because it is specific to stationary running so doesn’t need to factor in as many environmental factors. Although, if you’d prefer a less specific app you could find any regular running app in the health and fitness section of your app store.

The bottom line is, we’d advise getting a virtual running app designed for a treadmill as they are generally more fitting to what you’ll be doing.

What is the best free treadmill workout app?

As you’re probably aware by now, whilst many of the treadmill workout apps on our list are free to download, their full range of features lie behind a paywall. This means that to access the apps with total freedom, you need to subscribe for a small monthly fee.

Despite this, you can still use and enjoy the apps without this subscription, and a great option for this is our #7 pick - Aaptiv Audio Fitness. Not only will the 30-day free trial give you access to all of the exclusive features, but you can still have a great time on this app without the monthly subscription.

The only downside is that you’d have access to a limited amount of classes when compared to the full version. However, you can still get a great workout with this treadmill running app in its free-to-use form.

Can you get a good workout on a treadmill?

Of course! A huge benefit to treadmill workouts is that they aren’t weather dependent. As most of us find it difficult or unpleasant to go on a run under tricky conditions such as heavy snow or rain, the treadmill eliminates this variable.

Being indoors at home or your local gym, you can use these in safe, stable conditions whenever you like. Higher-end treadmills offer customisable difficulty modifiers to simulate real-life conditions. For example, you can amplify the speed and incline of your treadmill track to resemble running uphill.

A treadmill workout uses the same muscles as running outdoors does. These muscles include the hamstrings, hip flexors, glutes, quads, and calves. Running on a treadmill essentially grants all the benefits of running anywhere else, so yes, you can still get a great workout by doing this.

Before You Go!

We hope we’ve helped you with our list of the best treadmill workout apps in 2021. Whether you want something cheap or expensive, something full of live classes to virtual running experiences or all of the above, our list has it all!

If you’re passionate about running then a career in the fitness industry might just be the thing for you. Fortunately, OriGym has a range of personal training courses to help get you started!
