How to Make a Yoga Eye Pillow

what is an eye pillow for yoga 2 image

Although we’ve showcased the best yoga eye pillows on the market, why not try also making your own?

Making a DIY yoga eye pillow is easy and only requires a few simple ingredients, most of which you probably already have in your cupboards.

To make a DIY yoga eye pillow at home, you will need:

  • Natural fibre fabric- cotton, silk, or linen.
  • Dried lavender
  • Linseed, flaxseed, or any other small dried grain or pulse.
  • Lavender essential oil (optional)
  • Fabric for the pillow
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine and supplies
  • Pins
  • Measuring tape or ruler

How to Make Yoga Eye Bags:

1. Make your filling: In a small bowl, mix 2 cups of your dried grain with 1 tablespoon of dried lavender.

2. If using, add 2 drops of lavender essential oil, then set the bowl aside.

3. Create the sleeve: Take your piece of fabric and cut it into a 5.5”x 10” rectangular shape. Pin the right sides of the fabric together along the sides and the bottom.

4. Next, sew the bottom and sides of this sleeve, being sure to leave the top seam open.

5. Pour your filling into the pillow, ensuring that all of the ingredients rest at the bottom.

6. Finally, sew the top closed. This is your DIY yoga eye pillow!

What Is the Best Filling for Yoga Eye Pillows?

yoga weighted eye pillow for yoga 1 image

Arguably, there is no one best filling for yoga eye pillows.

This is because everyone has different needs and preferences when it comes to a weighted eye mask for yoga, and there is no one size fits all option.

However, the filling that you choose may depend on whether you need eye pillows for yoga studios, or just for individual use.

If you’re running a studio, the best filling for your yoga eye pillow is plastic beads. This is because they’re more practical than natural fillings like flaxseed which have to be emptied out to be washed.

what is an eye pillow for yoga image 2

If you’re doing this for a class’s worth of people, between each session, this can quickly become impractical!

If you’re only washing your own eye mask between yoga sessions, it isn’t as impractical to empty out the bag and refill it so this is purely down to personal preference.

The most important thing to remember is that the smaller the seeds you use, the easier it is for the bag to mould to the contours of your face for comfort! That’s why most of the eye pillows for yoga on our list use flax or linseed!

Before You Go!

We hope that this article has helped you to narrow down those choices, and find the perfect eye pillow for yoga!
