What are yoga retreats?

In short, a yoga retreat is a humbling experience that allows you to focus on and learn more about the practice of yoga. A retreat can be completed locally or in an area far from your home, and often involves a trip to a location that holds a number of group yoga activities.

In many European countries, yoga retreats are very similar to luxury resort holidays. However, in Eastern countries, the concept of retreats tends to be more humble which often results in them being more affordable.

The purpose of the retreat will allow individuals of all yoga levels to deepen their practice without any other distractions in life. Yoga retreats in the UK tend to last over a single weekend, or perhaps up to a week at max. If you’re planning on visiting a yoga retreat in the near future (which we suppose is true since you're reading this post), check out our best yoga mats article to find the best equipment available!

The purpose of a yoga weekend retreat in the UK is to acquire a slower pace and focus on mindfulness, as well as the practice of yoga. The spiritual practice of yoga can be found throughout the world, and can be an incredibly beneficial thing to experience. The retreat may also focus on eating habits and seek to improve physical and spiritual health.

Now that we've answered the question; what is a yoga retreat?, let’s move on to the retreats themselves!

1. Yoga Retreat Holiday

Prices from £545

Yoga Retreat Holidays provide yoga weekend retreats in the UK, that offer daily yoga and meditation classes in a place of peace and tranquillity.

When you visit one of their retreats, you will feel nurtured, relaxed, and nutritiously inspired. You will also benefit from improved focus, body alignment, muscle tone, and flexibility during this time, and be able to sustain this with regular yoga practice at home.

When you return home, you will feel physically and mentally refreshed, which is the sign of a great retreat!

Yoga Retreat Holidays hold a number of luxury yoga retreats in the UK that are affordable, and are located in picturesque locations such as the Lake District and the Canterbury countryside. They also provide retreats to Menorca on the Balearic Islands, which is the perfect location to fall in love with your yoga practice.

In Canterbury, you will be able to enjoy a weekend of yoga and meditation surrounded by nature reserves and coastal beaches. The retreat is situated in the open barns of Syndale Valley, which is just as glorious as it sounds.

This location in particular holds a small retreat with only 10 guests at a time, to ensure that you receive the one to one attention you deserve when you are practising.

You will be able to enjoy long walks and relax, and also book yourself a massage on the retreat. One great thing about this venue is that it is only an hour away from central London, and less than an hour from Dover, which makes it an ideal yoga day retreat in the UK for those who live in close proximity!

The weekend retreat in Canterbury is all-inclusive, and a great way to connect with the outdoors if you haven’t in a long while. It’s also pretty accessible, and would be an ideal last-minute yoga retreat in the UK for those who reside nearby.

Some other great things to note are the spacious and light rooms with stunning garden views, and the fact that all yoga equipment will be included. Prices start from £325.00 which is great considering how many yoga classes you will receive over the course of the weekend.

If you’re interested in the villa in Menorca, you’ll be glad to know that it has plenty of charm and character, and is less than a minutes walk away from great views of the sea.

The villa has a large private pool and roof terrace, and has plenty of trees and scenic views. There are a variety of classes such as Qigong and Yoga, and if the weather is suitable, you will be able to take the classes outside.

As the beach is a short walk away, you will be able to enjoy that along with the hidden caves that you will be able to explore when you have some free time during the retreat.

This yoga retreat accommodates 8 people, and since the price starts at £545, it’s a great bargain for those looking for cheap yoga retreats from the UK. You can’t complain at a week-long retreat for under £600!

2. The Tree Earth

Prices from £295

If you are looking for a meditation yoga retreat in the UK that is located in Yorkshire, then this place is for you. Located in the heart of the North York Moors National Park, the retreat is an ideal place to rest and recharge the body, mind, and soul.

The stresses of everyday life will be replaced by the soothing benefits of meditation, yoga, spa treatments, and delicious vegetarian food. The retreat is situated just outside the village of Rosedale Abbey, which is a stunning location in itself.

The Tree is like a home away from home, and would be a great place to bring friends and family along with you. There’s an eight-bedroom guesthouse with a chapel so you will be able to unwind and catch up on sleep.

At The Tree, they provide a welcoming atmosphere to escape, relax and re-energise. The vegetarian food has been highly recommended by people who have already visited The Tree retreat, so if you eat a mostly plant-based diet you’ll be glad to know this! Throughout the year, they run regular relaxation and yoga weekend workshops, so it’s also easy to avoid disappointment when you miss one of the bookings.

The retreat itself consists of a variety of different relaxation techniques and it also includes meditation and guided relaxation, which makes it an ideal yoga detox retreat in the UK.

If you are more experienced in yoga and meditation, there’s also a chance to deepen your practice even further; they offer a five-day silent retreat. They also provide a training course in the practice of Kriya yoga which is a fantastic way to develop your skills, and could include yoga poses for two!

Another great thing about the location of this particular retreat is the environmental policy that they use. They use local suppliers and some of the vegetables that are used for the meals are from a nearby organic farm. Also, all of the food waste is composted and goes to a nearby farm.

The weekend will consist of an easy introduction to the eight limbs of yoga and will give you an insight into the healing and health benefits that yoga can bring to you. It will be open to men and women of all ages and abilities when it comes to yoga.

It has a consistently laid back atmosphere which means that you do not need to dress up when you have your meals, and that all you will need to do is just dress in what feels comfortable for you. You don’t need to worry about looking antisocial if you are going alone either, as everyone sits at the same table to eat, which means that no one will be left out in conversation.

The cost of the yoga retreat for the weekend will be £315 per person if you are based in The Tree accommodation, but if you are staying in The Old Chapel, it will cost £295 per person. This is an ideal beginners yoga retreat in the UK, especially since it’s reasonably priced.

If you are looking to practice yoga and meditation at a more advanced level, then you’ll be glad to know that one of the staff members at The Tree (named Edward) runs a silent retreat twice-yearly, that lasts for 5 days.
