This course is approved by PD Approval and fully endorsed by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs). Learners can study OriGym’s Level 2 Fitness Instructor course online, part-time, or on a full-time basis to become an accredited Level 2 Gym Instructor in as little as two weeks. 

Once qualified, learners will be prepared and certified to gain employment as an instructor within a gym or fitness centre, either in the UK or abroad, or alternatively will meet the prerequisites to continue onto a Level 3 Personal Training qualification.

About the Course

Perfectly suited for anyone with a passion for health, fitness and exercise, the job of a fitness instructor covers a range of responsibilities. A typical day on the job could include conducting health assessments, performing inductions for new gym members, helping members create exercise or diet plans, and maintaining gym equipment.

Who is this course for?

The course has been created to provide all the essential industry-standard knowledge and skills required for you to work expertly and confidently within a fitness environment, including being able to plan, instruct and evaluate one-on-one gym programmes.

Designed for those with a drive for health and fitness, and wishing to work within a gym, leisure club, or fitness centre environment, the OriGym Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification will qualify you to gain employment within these environments and enable you to progress to a Level 3 Personal Training qualification.

The Level 2 Fitness Instructor course has been developed to meet the needs of a rapidly changing industry, is both REPS and CIMSPA accredited, and is internationally recognised.

Course Info

Course Type: Full-Time In-Person, Part-Time Blended, or Online.
Course Length: Full-Time students can achieve the award within 2 weeks of study, whereas for part-time or online students it usually takes around 6 to 8 weeks to complete the programme.
Entry Requirements: As the entry level qualification to begin working within the fitness industry, this course has no qualification prerequisites for entry. However, students must be aged 16 years or older to be eligible to enrol.
Accreditations: The Level 2 Fitness Instructor course is accredited and endorsed by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS), the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA), and PD Approval.

What You’ll learn

Motivating Groups and Individuals

It’s very easy for individuals new to fitness to lost confidence and motivation, and even experienced exercise fanatics can feel like they’ve hit a wall sometimes. You will learn all about how to train clients in a way that keeps them both engaged by the content of your training and motivated to keep pushing themselves to new heights. 

Tailoring Training Sessions

Everybody is different, and goals can vary widely from client to client. This course will train you in successfully tailoring your training programs to each individual, assuring their experience is as fun and rewarding as possible.

Human Anatomy and Physiology

Understanding how the body works is fundamental to successful training. This course will provide you with the necessary knowledge to keep your training plans safe and effective, covering the heart and circulatory, respiratory, and digestive systems. 

Training Structure

This course will make sure your training structure is well planned with practical scenarios and workouts, thereby ensuring your clients meet their goals in a safe, structured and enjoyable manner. 

Principles of Exercise and Fitness

You’ll develop an in-depth understanding of the principles of exercise, including effective warm-up/cool-down exercises, cardiovascular activities, bodyweight and free-weight movements, and resistance training concepts, how to instruct them, and how they all fit into an effective, varied training plan.

Health, Safety and Welfare

Safety is paramount in fitness environments, as such you’ll learn how to identify and control risk factors, how to appropriately safeguard children and vulnerable adults, and emergency procedures in a gym or fitness environment.

Learning the Business

How does a successful fitness instructor market themselves? How do they maximise business opportunities? This course will help you develop a great understanding of advertising, marketing and promotion, which is fundamental for a successful career within the fitness sector. 

How You’ll Be Assessed

To qualify with your Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instruction you will be required to complete a selection of assessments, both examination-style and practical.

Throughout the course and your assessments, you’ll be supported by OriGym’s tutors, who are on-hand at all times to make sure your assessments are as stress-free as possible, improving your chances at passing first-time and succeeding in your Fitness Instructor course. 

Online & Part-Time Course Assessments

Students studying the fitness instructor course online or part-time will be required to complete three assessments – 2 online and 1 in-person:

  • Multiple choice Open book online exam on anatomy and physiology - 70% pass required
  • Multiple choice Open book online paper on principles of exercise and health - 70% pass required
  • Practical Assessment on delivering a gym-based induction – Pass required

To complete the in-person practical assessment you will need to travel to an OriGym venue. These can be found in twelve major cities across the UK.

Full-Time Course Assessments

Full-time students are also expected to complete three assessments in order to qualify with the Level 2 award, however, the non-practical elements can be taken online: 

  • Multiple choice Open book online exam on anatomy and physiology- 70% pass required
  • Multiple choice Open book online paper on principles of exercise and health - 70% pass required
  • Practical Assessment on delivering a gym-based induction – Pass required

Utilising our innovative, award-nominated online learning platform, “Student Zone”, OriGym students can choose to study their Level 2 Fitness Instructor course completely online.

Making use of a series of interactive online learning resources, e-books and PDFs, online lectures, and training manuals, students can study all of their modules and exams online, with only a single practical assessment requiring in-person attendance.

As online learning is self-paced, students can take as little or a long as they wish to complete the programme. All online gym instructor students are supported by personal tutors, who are themselves experts fitness instructors and gym instructors, and who are available 7 days a week by phone or email. 


The part-time option provides a blended learning experience, combining in-person tuition with online studying using our e-learning platform. This is perhaps the most popular option for many OriGym students as it perfectly balances learning from homes and attending regular practical workshops.

These workshops are entirely practically focused, running from 12 locations UK wide and restricted to small groups, ensuring you get the absolute maximum out of each day spent training. Combined with the opportunity to then study and revise online at your own pace, many students choose this option to fit their studies around their existing work, family and life commitments.


The full-time gym instructor course is 2 weeks of intensive study where you will learn in a classroom setting from 9am-5:30pm, Monday to Friday. OriGym is lucky to have our very own bespoke training centres, where you will study uninterrupted from gym members and staff to focus on your qualifications. Only our most prestigious tutors teach our full-time courses and you will study in groups no more than 12 to maximise your learning experience. 

OriGym loves to keep our full-time courses engaging and practically based, which is why every day you will be on the gym floor as well as learning in our designated, custom built classroom during the theory elements of the course.

For anyone looking to qualify and break into a fitness career as soon as possible, the full-time learning option is ideal.

Progression Routes

After graduating from your Level 2 Fitness Instructor qualification there are multiple progression pathways you could follow to continue growing in your new fitness career, improving your earning potential and unlocking new client populations to work with.

One of the most popular progression routes after a Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification is to advance onto the Level 3 Personal Trainer award. Achieving the Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification will enable you to begin working as a dedicated personal trainer within gyms or other fitness institutions, taking on your own clients and helping them achieve their fitness goals.

If you already know you’d like to become a Personal Trainer, our Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training combines both the Level 2 Fitness Instructor and Level 3 Personal Trainer awards! 

Alternatively, you may wish to pursue another Level 3 qualification and begin to specialise in a particular are. OriGym offer Level 3 Exercise Referral and Level 3 Sports Massage Therapy courses, both of which focus on elements of health, wellbeing and recovery through fitness.

If you aren’t quite ready to progress to a Level 3 qualification, we also provide a series of CPD courses which enable you to train in a specialist area, such as Strength and Conditioning, Group Exercise or Boxing Pad Workouts.

No prior qualifications are required to study the Level 2 Fitness Instructor course. It is specifically designed to provide an entry level qualification for the fitness industry and to begin working within gym and fitness environments.

A basic level of maths and English will be required to understand some course content. Also as practical elements are involved a basic knowledge and level of physical fitness will be necessary.

As with all OriGym courses, students must be aged 16 years or older in order to enrol.

Our Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instruction is endorsed and accredited by REPS (Register of Exercise Professionals), CIMSPA (Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity), and the non-profit organisation Skills Active.

Students studying the programme on a full-time basis can complete the course in two-weeks, after which they will be qualified to work as a gym instructor. Part-time or online learning students complete the course in an average of 6-8 weeks.

OriGym provides students studying the Level 2 Fitness Instructor award with three study methods: Full-Time, Part-Time and Online. 

Full-Time students study in-person with OriGym tutors at one of our 12 specialist training venues in cities across the UK. Full-time study runs Monday to Friday.

Part-Time students study through blended learning, which combines in-person training at one of our UK venues with independent study via our award-nominated “Student Zone” e-learning platform.

Students studying the Level 2 Fitness Instructor course online will complete their qualification through OriGyms award nominated e-learning platform, utilising OriGym’s expertly crafted content in the form of videos, online lectures, interactive e-learning, e-books and more. Online students are required to attend practical examinations at one of our UK venues where they will complete a formative assessment to demonstrate competency. If you refer the formative assessment, you will be asked to attend a practical based workshop (Workshop 3) to help prepare and give you extra practical help prior to re-assessment of your practical.
